You can set your New Tab page to show a search bar, your most visited sites, recommended and highlighted stories or nothing at all. To access these controls, click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner of the new tab. Learn more about these controls here.

Customize your New Tab page

  1. Click the cogwheel at the top right corner of the New Tab page.

  2. Put a check mark next to the settings you want to see:
    • Search: turns the search box on or off on the New Tab page.
    • Top Sites: shows sites you visit the most.
      • Put a check mark next to Show two rows if you'd like to see an additional row of Top Sites.
    • Recommended by Pocket to see stories that are popular among Pocket users.
    • Highlights to see pages you've visited or bookmarked recently.
    • Snippets to see stories from Mozilla.

Blank New Tab Page

If you prefer a blank page:

  1. Click the cogwheel at the top right corner of the New Tab page.

  2. Remove all check marks to hide all sections from your New Tab page.

Show your top sites

Click the cogwheel icon on the New Tab page and put a check mark next to Show your top sites.

To remove all sites from the New Tab page, select Show blank page.

Disable New Tab controls

To hide everything on the New Tab page, including the New Tab controls, follow these steps:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and press EnterReturn.
    A warning page may appear. Click Accept the Risk and Continue to go to the about:config page.
  2. Type browser.newtab.url in the search box.
  3. Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and change the URL from about:newtab to about:blank. Alternately, you can change it to about:home for your default home page, or your preferred home page by typing in its URL.
  4. Click OK and close the about:config tab.

To hide everything on the New Tab page, including the New Tab controls (or to choose the page that opens in a new tab) you can install the New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) add-on.
