Firefox OS article scope draft

  1. Hi all,

For those who are interested in the development of help articles for Firefox OS, I have drafted a set of landing pages that describe the first-pass scope of what we need to cover. Any and all comments are welcomed and encouraged at this stage. My hope is to have alpha drafts of all the topics by the end of this quarter (provided software is available).

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-controls-and-options-firefox-os-phones

  5. Hi all,

As an update, we've started to draft some alpha content in new articles now that many of the apps are working well enough to document.

Use this topic article as a template for the simple how-tos for alpha: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-contact

To start a new article, go to https://support.mozilla.org/kb/new then just paste in the content from the above article to get started.

Use the articles I linked in my first post to get an idea of the topics that we should start with first if you are stuck and need some ideas.

The Gallery has most of the icons you'll need, let me know if it doesn't and I'll get them uploaded for you (don't let that stop you from creating new topic articles)!

We're going for small articles that cover just one topic, so we'll have lots of them. Apps that we could use help with are as follows:

    • Gallery
    • Lock (done)
    • Music (done)
    • SMS (done)
    • Video
    • Calendar (done)
    • Settings (done)
    • Utility tray

    Thanks! Michelle

  7. I'm trying to write article(s) for the FM Radio app, but I'm running into some questions/doubt:

    • Using the latest Windows emulator, the app seems very unfinished. The background is plain white, the UI is basically oversized text symbols. I assume I should not bother to include any screenshots in the documentation, right?
    • It's hard to tell what the buttons are for -- there are both > and >> buttons, but they seem to be doing the same. I assume that the double >> is for auto scanning for a strong signal, but I feel like I'm just guessing here.
    • Other functionality just seems broken. For example, there's a way to edit saved stations, but the buttons don't seem to do anything. I can't delete a bookmarked radio station.

All in all, it feels a bit early to start to document this app, so I'm trying to figure out if I should really bother at this point or if I should wait until the UI and basic functionality is there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

  8. Hi David,

Thanks for your help with the radio documentation. It does sound like your software is out-of-date, the UI has been updated. But, having said that, the functionality is the same, so I encourage you to just write a simple article about opening to app (the final app icon is in the gallery), using your headphones, scanning stations and bookmarking stations.

  9. As mentioned in the SUMO meeting this morning, we have created some of the Firefox Marketplace content too. If you have access to the Mozillians preview of the Marketplace, feel free to add your comments and improvements to the articles: * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-marketplace/history * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-access-firefox-marketplace/history * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-report-about-faulty-app-firefox-marketplace/history * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-uninstall-app/history * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-apps/history * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-navigate-and-find-apps-firefox-marketplace/history

  10. Hi all,

Ibai, those articles are looking good!

I have updated the getting started landing page article with links to a bunch of new articles for use as templates: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/getting-started-firefox-os-phone

Thanks to everyone for helping out! I left the radio as a TBD just for you David! :)

With the getting started articles alpha drafted and Ibai's and Roland's work on Marketplace and Email, we are about 45% complete for alpha! Woot!

I'll start on the customize controls, options, settings list of tasks tomorrow (but I have lots of meetings tomorrow, so I might not make much progress until Wednesday).

    Thanks, Michelle

  11. I updated the list with one extra article that completes the basic functionality that we are covering until we implement the payment flows.

This is part of the list that we discussed months ago. If anyone thinks there's anything big missing, please let me know. Otherwise, I will start adding articles for the rest of the Firefox OS apps.

  12. Hi all:

tl;dr We need your help! Please write Email articles #1, #2, #3 below and let us know you have done so by replying to this thread!

Here's a list of all the articles I have written so far for email:

And here's a list of articles I have written so far for camera:

Given the current state of the camera app, I am going to wait a few days before writing more camera content.

Good First KB Articles to write

Software developers have the concept of a good first bug so I thought I'd prepare a quick list of articles Good First KB Articles to write for email. The email app seems to be more mature or at least more comparable to existing email and therefore easy to write so I started there.

And I picked articles that are easy because you can just copy and paste and quickly modify an existing article.

    Good First Articles for email

    1. flagging/bookmarking messages - just copy the text for Deleting email messages in Firefox OS and change the delete icon (search for [[Image:delete]]) to the one for bookmark namely [[Image:bookmark]]
    2. Moving Messages to folders - just copy the text for Deleting email messages in Firefox OS and change the delete icon (search for [[Image:delete]]) to the one for move namely [[Image:move icon]]
    3. Marking messages as read/unread - just copy the text for Deleting email messages in Firefox OS and change the delete icon (search for [[Image:delete]]) to the one for marking read namely [[Image:mark read]]

    Resources for Writing Email Articles

It is quite possible to write KB articles just using the app wiki page and the visual and interaction PDFs. Ideally you'd also have the simulator working but it's not absolutely essential for the moment.

This is beta software so our articles will change, embrace change!'

I have been through many 1.0s, alphas and betas and the only thing they have in common is change. Embrace it :-) ! Expect it!

Icons will change, and flows will change but the more we document now the better. This is why we are keeping the articles short for now. Also don't post screenshots as these will change. If you want, leave a placeholder for screenshots now. I recommend writing articles that require the bare minimum of screenshots!

  15. Ibai is right (and so too was I when I mentioned this upthread)! This works well on Mac (and I bet it works well on Linux but I haven't tried it). Currently crashes on Windows.

If you are on Windows, once bug 795484 is fixed, R2D2B2G should work great!

  20. Hi, Is it possible to add Gapps to Firefox OS.

    Gapps

    • Sync Google Contact
    • Sync Google Calendar

I prefer Google sync instead of Facebook, because in Facebook name are not exact their real name..
In India, so many names are common, so its a big headache to identify the person with their Facebook name.
In Google i use the name as i wish.
