What Jefferson, mentioned, basically. The product team has confirmed that users shouldn't see any significant implication due to this change. The main antivirus app should run as usual even without the extension.

Looking at screenshots for the "Avast Online Security & Privacy" extension, it seems like it mostly offered tracking protection features, which are redundant, but also could inject search result reputation ratings flags into some search results sites. That latter feature might be harder for users to replace with a free product.
