Heads-up for users running Firefox 78 (general release or ESR) or older

  1. Hey folks,

Previously, Mandy has shared here that Firefox desktop will be retiring BrowserID (a protocol to leverage data syncing via Mozilla Accounts) officially on March 31. BrowserID has already been retired everywhere except our current ESR version V78.

This will impact a pretty significant amount of users, so we're planning to communicate this via email to those impacted by this change in Feb 22.

Users running a version of Firefox equal to or older than Firefox 78 (general release or ESR) and are using a Mozilla Account must follow these steps to ensure continued operation of their Mozilla Account:

    1. Make sure you have your password for your Firefox account (now called Mozilla account). If you do not have your password, you can reset it using account recovery keys.
    2. Backup your profile folder, just in case anything goes wrong.
    3. Update your Firefox browser. If you get an error when trying to update, you can reinstall Firefox.
    4. Sign back into your account in the newly-updated Firefox!

Let me know if you have any questions about this change.

  2. Hey folks,

The email is coming up tomorrow. To be clear, those who failed to follow the instruction above will lose their synced data only if the Firefox that they are updating is the only Firefox they are syncing with.

If they have another Firefox that is syncing, the same data should be stored in the other Firefox instance, and therefore, they won't lose their data.

Please let me know if you see a user who might be impacted by this change reach out to us.

  3. We got a question from a MacOS 10.10.x user. There is no upgrade for that version of MacOS.

If anyone has a proposed solution, please chime in! Thanks.

Thanks for escalating here, Jefferson. Unfortunately, Sync is going to stop for older machines that can't be upgraded. So I'm afraid there's no other solution in this case.

    This should only effects Sync.

Thanks for the headsup Kiki! Are there any numbers of how many users will be affected?

If I'm not mistaken, this affects around 450k users.

  11. Oh wow! Thanks Kiki. I was expecting high numbers in the 100k+ range so thanks for confirming it. I'm little worried about those users coming to SUMO at the end of March but hopefully not everyone is using Sync. *Fingers crossed*

  12. To be sure, does this sync support change also affect Android Firefox users?

Does not help that there was that versions gap between 68.11.0 and 80.0 if I recall.
