[Migration] Forum Moderation

  1. Hi everybody,

Let's start discussing what are our ideas and "nice to haves" when it comes to moderation.

One feature that I think would be useful and I that I think Lithium has available is the possibility of viewing edit history (and also who and when made what edits). In this way moderators do not have to copy paste the original message in the moderators forums and everybody should be able to see why a certain user has been proposed for "suspension".

Also a feature like merging duplicate threads could come in very handy.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Not currently sumo

    • if a moderator edits someone else's post, an email should be sent to the author of the post.
That way we don't have to post a reply to the thread just to make sure that person gets notified, and we don't end up with misleading solutions:answers ratios.
    • hold posts for moderator approval
Sometimes a thread can get out of hand with others chiming in, but the issue still isn't solved, so it would hurt to just lock the thread. In this case, any new posts will be held for moderator approval before being added to the thread.

    Already in sumo

    • edit posts
    • lock threads
    • move threads (if there are other forums instead of tags)
    • edit tags :)
    • edit titles
    • mark a post as solution
    • delete posts
    • delete image attachments
    • mark a post as spam (hides it from view of non-moderators, disables account, and marks other posts from that poster as spam)
    • edit profile display names
    • a way to report something for moderator action
      • include reason for reporting item
    • a place to check items reported for moderator action
      • include name of person who reported the item (so we can PM them if necessary)
    • documentation of who disabled what account

  3. Great to hear there's a way to view post edit history! Should save us quite a bit of extra work.

Merging duplicate threads would be awesome. I hear they also have a thread splitting option which would be very helpful. Hoping they really have this feature.

    Other nice to haves:

    • Way to add a comment/reason for banning a user
    • PM rate limiting to prevent a single user from spamming you
    • PM blocking - Block certain accounts from PM'ing you
    • Lock post edited by moderator - They might already have this
    • ^ Would prevent someone from undoing our edits to their post
    • Notifications (in UI & email) that something is in the moderator queue

Anything else I think of I'll edit into this post. :)

  4. on some (rare) occasions we have frustrated users who, after posting their question and discovering the forum, going off venting and interrupting unrelated threads, which is ruining the experience for everyone involved. in those instances some kind of temporary timeout or option to restrict them to replying to their own thread would come handy.

  5. The ability to split selected posts off as a new thread and to merge a thread into a existing thread would be useful.

Some newer users hijack an existing thread in trying to get help and OP then gets frustrated in not getting help directly anymore or things can get off topic or just needs to be cleaned off.

Posts that get split could have a feature where it says somewhere the thread number it was splitted off from whether as a new thread or into say a Locked forum section. This way we easily know where it came from originally. edit: if need be we can just add thread number to subject or post.

Some newer users would make new threads to reply to replies made in their original thread so those posts could perhaps be merged into original thread as we currently lock those and link to existing thread.

Being able to lock individual posts is useful whether you make post edits or not.

Anybody who has moderated on phpBB3 may be familiar with the Moderator Control Panel. It is a handy way to monitor the latest actions or the separate reported posts, reported PM's and the moderation logs by both members and staff.

The moderator logs shows the post Approved/Disapproved with reasons, post edits (locking individual posts shows as edit), who locked thread. It shows post and thread deletion and since regular members can delete their own thread/post if nobody replies after it shows that also. It also shows logs of who banned an account, IP, and email details.

Yes we have the Moderate Forum Content section here but it is more basic and reported posts is only logged there as long as no mod/admin removes it. It makes no log of when a moderator action is done on a thread/post there either though individual posts do log who edited post.

However yes there is the who deactivated users log page but due to the search posts bug on many deactivate accounts it makes it harder to know why an account was deactivated.

  6. I completely agree having the option to start a new topic based on a response in a thread would be very useful, instead of having to ask the person to post somewhere else and the message marked as spam or unrelated in some way.

Another moderation thought I would like to add to the migration is to have notes on threads to different changes that were made when a thread is marked as needed of moderation. In lithium it seems to have a queue for just moderators to make notes on particular threads, however the notes can be seen by a user if they ask for them. This might make escalated disputes more centralized, but with the right permissions so that it is still safe to discuss.

  7. Rachel from what I read the user does not see the Moderation notes, The point however was made that it may be possible to force legal disclosure in some jurisdictions. All in all from what I have seen in the training the built in Lithium tools for moderation and spam seem pretty good.

I am sure Mozilla's legal department will be looking at all this and I doubt we will have any problems. If any of this type of legislation applies users on Kitsune will also be able to force disclosure of moderation etc comments.

I am not certain what the current position is some moderation related comment may be deleted when accounts are deleted.

One thing I did notice is that in the those doing the banning would see the email address of the person being banned.I am sure however there will be a relatively simple tweak to make it possible for a mod to disable an account without seeing the email address.

I think it might also be handy to be able to restrict users from certain discussion categories after giving that user a warning.

  9. phpBB3 does allow IP or account bans for as little as 30mins or a hour however the idea of a Ban is a little harsh compared to saying you are limited from posing for insert time as a warning.

  10. I note it also mentioned on Lithium that moderation could restrict someone to read only access. It explained one advantage that had is that it still allows them to receive messages, (would they be able to reply / post messages ? I wonder)

  11. In my experience, blocking a pissed off user just gets them more pissed off. I would prefer to let them vent, but prevent others from seeing it.

  12. before you get to excited here just remember that new support volunteers come from the ranks of those seeking support in the majority of cases.

On coming to SUMO the things that rally made me feel I did not want to be here were.

    • An artificial limit on my posts. I had to be added to some group vefore I could do what I had been doing for year.
    • Having my threads moderated by folks that really do not understand the subject matter.
    • Having to go looking for threads in some obscure forum to learn what is being updated. I am now subscribed to so much stuff I almost need filters to manage SUMO contributor and KB email and still I learn about things after the event.
    • Even after years, I still have trouble with the nit picking and the desire to cover everything with a policy that no one reads or realistically can find.

SO the features that I was used to in Get Satisfaction that I think any half decent fora should provide.

    • For a topic to be opened a something more specific that a question? People post with ideas, problems and questions to borrow from get satisfaction.
    • All topics need a way to finalize them in some way, either are refered to Bugzilla or Answered. The user is often not a good choice of determining when the topic should be closed. But topic should not be left hanging until some program sweeps them up as stale incomplete matters.
    • The ability to finalize topics with something other than Solved. For example User Question "Can I access Yahoo mail with Firefox?" answer "Yes" This is answered, not solved. Other things are yep we know about it. sad really but that is life. Sorry about that. Again not a solution.
    • The ability to finalize a topic by merging it into another existing one. This covers duplicate posts by the authors, and duplicate issues. When we get 500 posts about a topic, having 500 threads is just a waste of time. The user can either read what is in the thread or wait further discussion on the thread. But making 500 individual posts is pointless in the extreme. It also make the implementation notice of a idea simple as well.
    • All this talk about limiting users and suspending them or whatever. In five years I have never limited anyone but spammers either here or at get satisfaction. Get satisfaction however limited moderation to the forums you were appointed moderator in though, not carte blanche over everything.
    • An ability for moderators to simply email offenders to take things off list. If your dealing with a prat, giving them a forum to address only makes things worse as often as not. So instead of limiting access to email addresses. ALL moderators should see the email when they moderate.

In response to what Chris says, I see that venting occurring in email, not some fire-walled part of the forum.
