Firefox 49 Release Notes / Issues / Discussions

  1. Firefox 49 is scheduled to be released on 2016-09-20

release notes: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/49.0/releasenotes/ fixed security issues: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/#firefox49 (to be disclosed at the time of release)

with firefox 49 it's time to say goodbye to a couple of things:

    • Firefox support has ended for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8: the recommendation for affected users is to upgrade their os or switch to firefox 45esr to extend life-support for a couple of more months.
    • Firefox will no longer run on old processors without SSE2-support (which might affect hardware produced in the first half of the 2000s & older). this is a by-product of changing to MSVC2015 to compile firefox. again, switching to esr may buy affected users a couple more months of security updates at least...
    • Support for Hello discontinued in Firefox 49

new and possibly user facing stuff:

    • text-to speech: reader mode can now narrate an article by making use of the system's tts voice & support for webspeech api is introduced
    • on mac os x, firefox can now also be updated by an admin account other than the person who originally installed it - bug 394984
    • changes in font rendering are also mentioned in the release notes

    one more goodie:

hi, mozilla will still support the underlying webrtc technology in the browser - so people concerned about ip address leaking behind a vpn should see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Media/WebRTC/Privacy to adjust their settings.

now the release date also is confirmed to be delayed & firefox 49 is likely going to be published on 2016-09-20.

  6. How is the progress in multiprocess ('e10s') ?

How many will get that option in 49 ?

In the latest stages of 48 how is the status of "e10" ? Over 10% release ? (related post for 48)

    thanks

  7. in 48, e10s was turned on for 100% of eligible users (no windows xp, no rtl-locale, no accessibility tools enabled) around the start of september, which covered around 40% of the whole firefox userbase.

starting in 49 it is now also enabled for users with webextensions and a couple of particular whitelisted addons (Greasemonkey, Download YouTube Videos as MP4, Video Download Helper, Lightbeam, Adblock Plus, uBlock Origin, Emoji Cheatsheet, Awesome Screenshot Plus, PersonasPlus, Add-on Compatibility Reporter).

  8. Another change is the Allow enabling TLS 1.3 probably as a test for users who want to check specific sites. (Of course it is NOT the default option)

Firefox Hello will be discontinued and removed from Firefox on September 20, 2016, when version 49 is released, ...

The Hello toolbar button is still on the Navigation Toolbar, and it works to open the Signup doorhanger.

Hello still appears in Troubleshooting Information under Extensions as Enabled.

    Anyone else still see it?

  10. I don't see that. I just updated to Firefox 49 (64-bit) on Windows 7. The Hello button is gone and Firefox Hello is no longer listed under Extensions on the Troubleshooting Information page. The loop@mozilla.org.xpi file is also gone from the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\features folder.

  11. I still see the Hello button, with a heads up in the dropdown that it is being removed soon. But my Windows 10 32 bit Firefox Release is still on Fx48.0 and reporting it is up to date. Fx 50.0a2((2016-09-19)) has no Hello button.

I will restart and see if I get an update.

No neither of them has updated any further, seems I am not getting updates at present.

  12. Updates to 49 on Windows are turned off. Folks with websense should not get updated to anything past 47.0.1. Folks without websense should not get updated to anything past 48.02. (this may change soon) Mac/Linux users will get updated to 49.

Do you have a reference for that? I updated to Firefox 49 (64-bit) on Windows 7 yesterday, at appx. 7:30 PM EDT, as I posted above. I used the internal updater.

I made a revision to the Support for Hello discontinued in Firefox 49 article that's pending review, to account for the fact that Hello won't be removed until you update Firefox to version 49.

  16. Hello, I've already left a message in the article discussion area, but maybe it is worth to post even here.

In version 49 the Reader Mode has a new feature allowing the user to listen the page read by the Windows vocal assistant. Now, in Italian versions of Windows 7 no Italian-speaking assistant is available, only the English speaking voice. Probably this is true even in Windows 8 and solved in Windows 10 (I don't use these versions).

Moreover, 1) Very little documentation is provided from Microsoft: it involves the download/install of two packages (one for the Speech Engine and one for the IT-Language).

    2) A Windows registry change - better call it a hack - is needed to make the Italian language visible in the list of available voices.

    3) This solution works in 64-bit Firefox but the new language is not available in 32-bit version.

Is this true even for other languages? If it so, I think that it is a good idea to say it in the appropriate article(s).

    Thanks for your attention.

    ....

My Windows Fx48 was able to update to Fx49 today, so the updates are back on again.

My Fx49, like Fx50.a2 has no Hello icon.

Please also note the post above regarding reader speech mode is an open topic still.

  20. First example I've seen of applying -webkit-prefixed rules breaking a site:

Huge part of website is scrolled after update? - https://csgosell.com/ (note the short inventory box on the right that starts to animate open but stops well short of the available space)

When troubleshooting layout issues that started in Firefox 49, you can toggle a preference and reload the page to check the result.

    (1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste webk and pause while the list is filtered

    (3) Double-click the layout.css.prefixes.webkit preference to switch the value from true to false
