SUMO community discussions

Category/Topics refresh

  1. Hi Everyone,

(I'm posting this here because topics also affect community members who don't work on articles).

It’s been a while since we’ve cleaned up our topics. Since some features are going (or have gone) away, and since our topics will no longer be tied to the old Ask a Question system, we have the opportunity to revisit and optimize our topics.

Here’s what I’m proposing for Firefox and Firefox for Android:

    https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/13ztWBbUtMQgGhEUK9PZBSJ9nMnLehdrMQzf_rRVRCjE/edit?usp=sharing

In short, here are the changes:

    • Advanced and Experimental features - New (desktop only) - the intention here is to highlight high profile but experimental features like Test Pilot and Containers, as well as useful but little-known tips and tricks that show how customizable Firefox really is. I’m hoping this will encourage contributors to write articles about their favorite Firefox tricks. Caveat: we’ll need to make sure that users realize that this is experimental so they it wouldn’t work perfectly.
    • Basics -changed from “Basic Browsing” - this doesn’t only cover browsing, but also essentials like bookmarks, search and tabs.
    • Personalize Firefox - changed from Manage preferences - the task sounds clearer, simpler and perhaps more appealing to the user. “Manage preferences” sounds daunting and a bit of a chore.

But we won’t just take my word for it -- we’ll need to test this new navigation. When the new staging site is ready, we’ll have these topics and articles up for testing and we need your help. We’ll run some tests with users outside of the community, but we’d like your feedback too. Please click through these topics and give us your impressions. Let us know what’s confusing, awkward or just plain weird.

Excited? I am! Just keep an eye out on the forums and on the community meetings. We’ll let you know when the staging site is ready.

    Joni

I get a "Google Drive - Access Denied" page which says "You need permission".

  3. I got an invitation email to edit the spreadsheet after asking for access (Thanks, Joni) .

  4. Usual question I suppose. Are these categories just for the KB articles alone or are they going to get used for Forum Questions too ?

So if we carefully craft topic/categories whatever for KB articles do we then suddenly discover those are also the categories users must choose from or be allocated to when thy ask a question ?

This may have been answered elsewhere but for instance I missed the new platform Videos and will need to catch up on that, so sorry if I am asking something that is already made clear in a platform meeting.

Also is there only going to be one tier of categories ? We have hundreds of KB articles are we going to have scores of articles per top level category, and no lower tiers of categories ? Are we going to try to list all KB articles or just a very small proportion of them ?

Also I thought we were trying to keep all Lithium discussion to only the one thread and one document

If you have any feedback or questions, please do not send us PMs, IRC messages or emails. Instead, please use this thread, and the migration document as the only two places to discuss and document the migration process. This will make it much easier for everyone to follow and participate in the migration process. {Vesper's emphasis)

  5. Hi

I really like the idea of a "Advanced and Experimental features" category. Not only will this help people using new features in pre-Release builds (the take up of which is likely to improve) but it will also enable new contributors to SUMO to get used to writing and editing articles.

I like the idea that we will be able to support Test Pilot and possibly other useful hacks that people know about. I notice that this new category has been listed under Firefox, but I think it would be good to also have the same section for Firefox for Android as I know of a few useful hacks, but also that I think some of the experimental stuff could be heading for that platform.

A great idea, looking forwards to seeing it go live (and possibly helping write a few articles!).

  6. Thanks for all your questions and feedback.

John, from what I understand the forum topics and KB topics no longer need to be tied together in Lithium, so we won't be forced to use the same topics. I'll do some digging around on the support forum structure on Lithium and we can have a separate discussion on forum categories.

Seburo, we can certainly add Experimental/Advanced to Android as well. I originally left it out because I wasn't sure that we'd have enough content (we'd need at least 2 articles total). With your help, we will though.

Thanks for offering to write a few articles. They won't have great visibility on Kitsune, but we'll be able to highlight them on Lithium when we've exposed that Advanced topic (just a few more weeks!)
