Articles to feature Sign Language Video

  1. Hello,

I would like to make contribution with an idea on adding a sign language video on popular articles about "How to" and some other important announcements within Mozilla's development. That would bring some extra percent of populations to follow up with Mozilla's future development.

My thought adding Sign Language video to as part of translation would benefit Mozilla in to provide better service and accessibility for the Deaf community.

Since not many Deaf person are able to read, so it would be helpful if there were a video to better assist them in understanding and to resolve troubleshooting they may experience.

Please drop comment if you have any additional idea or suggestion to this idea!

  2. Thanks for posting this, strokehearty.

I would like to test this out an article. Let's pick one and do at least two versions of the article: one with a sign language video and one without.

Let's also figure out some ways to measure how successful we are. Should we look at video views? Article "helpfulness" votes?

Also, let's get some ideas on how we'd present the video. Will it be a link to YouTube? Where would the link be on the page? We can use A/B testing to experiment with different variations.

Let's give the community a few days to leave feedback and ideas. If we don't hear back by Friday, we can start experimenting with our own ideas. Feel free to nudge me with a private message, email or on irc in case I get swamped by then.

  3. Hi Joni, As you mentioned about,

I would like to test this out an article. Let's pick one and do at least two versions of the article: one with a sign language video and one without.

Maybe we can start at basic, like this "Find what version of Firefox you are using". Link to article - Click here

Let's also figure out some ways to measure how successful we are. Should we look at video views? Article "helpfulness" votes?

We can measure that by using YouTube, since they have counter, thumb up and down, but disable comments.

Also, let's get some ideas on how we'd present the video. Will it be a link to YouTube? Where would the link be on the page? We can use A/B testing to experiment with different variations.

I would recommend to add a link to YouTube and put it on the very bottom of the page, below "Share this article" link and above "Was this article helpful?" stating it to something like, "Watch it in ASL Version {captioned in English}"?? Like you said A/B so we could do some more experiment.

Let's give the community a few days to leave feedback and ideas. If we don't hear back by Friday.

Yes, I am looking forward for more ideas from the community as well.

Maybe we can open new position for more volunteers to get involved in signing in the video?

  4. as you said that poor literacy might be an issue for affected users i thought maybe putting a pictogram next to all links to content in sign language might be of help - i've mocked it up here: http://i.imgur.com/aB3yuNh.png (i have put it on top of the share article link, because for the sake of the experiment it's easier to do there by simply adding it into an article's content, without any code changes)

maybe we can create a particular article in the kb where we embed the recorded youtube video and link to that, so that users get a more consistent navigation on our site and might also use our feedback tool by adding particular comments.

  5. This is just a test video, not official video. was experiment with it. To test things out, my video are unlisted only people with link can view, so I am posting it in here for an opinions. Again it is just a TEST video. https://youtu.be/iIoxnzAg9vw

I will not be the only one doing the video, I know many who willing come in and team up with this project and build better video quality and video editing.

    And....philipp

I totally agree with you Philipp on that one, it is the best way we can do to make sure it is accessible for everyone.

Likewise wanted more opinions or ideas, and feedback to be heard about this project from the community.

  6. i think mverdi, our moving-pictures-expert is still around at mozilla, maybe he could provide some advice & tips about how to produce/edit the videos...

  7. A link would get less attraction while an embedded video would but would be less useful for a lot of users. I'd hope that we will icorporate this with the accessibility articles present on SUMO.

  8. I was thinking.. maybe if we add language selection to Sign Language and the embed videos would appear on every articles to make it more accessible.

  9. i have created a barebone article to experiment with, add content to and maybe link to from other articles at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sign-language-content/history#preview

  10. Thanks for kickstarting this project, everyone! I'm ready to try A/B testing as soon as next week if you all are.

If anyone wants to help us with a logo or two (or three), please chime in. We can even A/B test with different logos to see which one gets the most traction.

  11. i have left the one logo from the mockup in the media gallery - it could be inserted into articles by:
