About a list of current tags: Looking for something else I happened to find this thread, /forums/contributors/708836 Is there somewhere a list of valid support forum filter tags? ...where cor-el posted some code to find tags. I went to a support forum thread and, using this code in a bookmarklet,

... I got this list of tags. "defection" is there, so is "offtoüic".

I agree with that.

Yes we still need some contributors documentation, but using a tag to track tag creation seems a simple and effective method of creating an initial list. That partially automates documentation. There will be precisely one tagged thread for each new tag, as long as Mods & Admins follow that procedure.

Quite a list of tags there, nearly 500 before we start adding more.
Some will be near enough obsolete, and some will be in a series that would allow any explanation to be compacted, eg the year or the Firefox version.
With some tags the intended use or meaning may well not be known or may have changed over time.

We're already supposed to notify the OP when adding the "offtopic" and "escalate" tags (see Answering questions on the Support Forum under "Off-topic questions) and Escalation Guidelines under "How to escalate"). It's also a good idea to tell the OP when the issue is bug-related but we shouldn't be required to document the fact that we add a bug### tag to the thread. Documenting addition of other tags depends of the tag being added and shouldn't be a "rule". For example, I add tags like "Mac OS {version}", "Windows {version}" "plugin" "add-ons", etc. to threads I happen to come across but haven't posted in when that info is missing, in case it helps other contributors give the right answer. I don't see the need to notify the OP or document it in the thread.
Looking over the list of tags, it needs major pruning. Hopefully Rachel or another admin with the right permissions can help there, to fix typos, consolidate duplicates, remove or consolidate tags for ancient Firefox versions (e.g., keep "Firefox 1.5" but remove "Firefox 1.5.0.1", etc.) and remove useless, silly tags ( "tomato"? ~~"lollipop"?~~ "stuff"?). Care should be taken, though, since some silly-looking tags like "x-ray-goggles" "thimble" and "popcorn-maker" are valid for Webmaker ... and "lollipop" is an Android OS version (thanks, John99).

OK maybe we do not always need to annotate a thread when adding a tag such as Mac , if that is missing. But
- I still think for breaking issues it is a good idea to add a note if for instance a potential relevant bug is identified. That helps those in the thread understand what the cause of the issue may be.
- And I still think the thread in which a new tag is first used is an ideal thread to tag with tagcreation or whatever. That allows us to easily understand what a tag was intended for and when it was introduced.

Thanks for that. There are other possible useless/silly tags besides "tomato" and "stuff", like "something" "funny" and "jokes". Anyway, what's more important would be to consolidate or remove duplicate or obsolete tags, assuming admin want to prune the list. Adding an "are you sure" prompt before a new tag is added might help prevent duplicates or mis-spelled tags (file a bug?)

There were some use cases that were mentioned before as well:
1. contributors can create tags for tracking and own work flow
2. admins want to know what is going on in the forums
3. expertise in specific type to look at types of questions(example: crashes, windows + firefox)
4. Bug numbers for engineering/android/more info/tracking
5. Organic tags users can add to describe with their own language
We do not do alot with tags right now and we are figuring what we want to do with tags for the future. This is what we "think" might be useful.
No plans for change yet. There was a short mention of it, a bug was not filed (at least I cannot find one).
As a moderator if you open a thread and type in a tag that does not exist and hit add, it should create a new one.
helpdesk was added to function the same as escalate because I notice there was some being tagged with this tag as well. Both work now. bug 1056239

The helpdesk tag isn't mentioned in Escalation Guidelines. #helpdesk is, under the "How to participate ..." section, but that's for IRC: IRC channel asked about the question #sumo, #helpdesk, #firefox, #mobile, #thunderbird, #mdn, #etc

Hi all:
I've run out of time this week and I'm away tomorrow Fri Feb 6 and Monday Feb 9 (off cross-country skiing in a rain storm oh well)
Here's the gist of my proposal which will definitely be in an etherpad someday soon :-) :
1. SUMO Firefox for Android forum only for FF35 and Android forum only for FF36 AND only for the first two weeks (e.g.Tuesday the 12Jan to 25Jan inclusive for FF35)
2. Which sets of tags? Two sets of tags:
 1. an unanswered set of tags: i.e. "difficult", "repetitive", "impolite", "vague" - in an attempt to guess why folks don't answer some questions after 72 hours (we will also do some sort of thread and or survey about this)
 2. a technical set of tags to describe in a general technical way and a more specific technical way the Firefox for Android problem. this set of tags are here: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/1GusXL1UBIeinvIWuffTEUvgyfKETS-axM3qF2imPtCM/edit#gid=354101726
3. I don't expect anybody but me to do the tagging for this experiment

Hi all: I've run out of time this week and I'm away tomorrow Fri Feb 6 and Monday Feb 9 (off cross-country skiing in a rain storm oh well) Here's the gist of my proposal which will definitely be in an etherpad someday soon :-) : # '''SUMO Firefox for Android forum only for FF35 and Android forum only for FF36 AND only for the first two weeks''' (e.g.Tuesday the 12Jan to 25Jan inclusive for FF35) # Which sets of tags? Two sets of tags: ## an unanswered set of tags: i.e. "difficult", "repetitive", "impolite", "vague" - in an attempt to guess why folks don't answer some questions after 72 hours (we will also do some sort of thread and or survey about this) ## a technical set of tags to describe in a general technical way and a more specific technical way the Firefox for Android problem. this set of tags are here: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/1GusXL1UBIeinvIWuffTEUvgyfKETS-axM3qF2imPtCM/edit#gid=354101726 # I don't expect anybody but me to do the tagging for this experiment # But of course comments and feedback welcome!
