Tag experiment

  1. About a list of current tags: Looking for something else I happened to find this thread, /forums/contributors/708836 Is there somewhere a list of valid support forum filter tags? ...where cor-el posted some code to find tags. I went to a support forum thread and, using this code in a bookmarklet,

    javascript:(function(){var T=JSON.parse(document.querySelector('*[data-tag-vocab-json]').getAttribute('data-tag-vocab-json')),I=[],i=0;for([n,v] in Iterator(T)){I.push('['+(++i)+'] "'+n+'": "'+v+'"')}with(window.open().document){write(I.join(',<br>\n'));close()}})()

... I got this list of tags. "defection" is there, so is "offtoüic".

They're listed in pairs. The first one is the tag. (I don't know what the second one is for). Display tag and coded tag? It's too long for one post so here's part 1: Edit: (list removed) See below for a sorted list.

Ok I have deleted the two posts but I still think we should have a policy that
    • Generally if someone adds a tag to a thread, they should mention it in that thread.
    • And definitely and specifically If someone adds a new tag they should document it by mentioning it.

I don't think that's a good idea. For one thing it wouldn't be helping the OP to get emails about tags added to his thread. If modertors want to ducument adding new tags, it should be in a contributor doc or thread.

The person adding the tag will almost certainly be posting in the thread anyway so there are no additional emails involved. I imagine helpdesk and especially other contributors would find it useful to see for instance at what point in a thread an escalation tag were added.

Even if someone was adding tags to multiple threads such as a bugnnn tag I think that would be useful to document, and instead of just adding the tag include an explanatory note. Maybe just a short comment that the issue is under investigation and may be related to a filed bug report.

Again useful information for all concerned. Why else add the tag.

I guess we need to improve the tag creation process, warn and ask for confirmation before creating a new tag, so that we do not get accidental tag creation.
    I agree with that.

Yes we still need some contributors documentation, but using a tag to track tag creation seems a simple and effective method of creating an initial list. That partially automates documentation. There will be precisely one tagged thread for each new tag, as long as Mods & Admins follow that procedure.

    (edit - format only change)

Also searching say by date will list for instance the latest new tags added ie all the newly tagged breaking issues and bug numbers.

  7. Quite a list of tags there, nearly 500 before we start adding more.

Some will be near enough obsolete, and some will be in a series that would allow any explanation to be compacted, eg the year or the Firefox version.

With some tags the intended use or meaning may well not be known or may have changed over time.

We're already supposed to notify the OP when adding the "offtopic" and "escalate" tags (see Answering questions on the Support Forum under "Off-topic questions) and Escalation Guidelines under "How to escalate"). It's also a good idea to tell the OP when the issue is bug-related but we shouldn't be required to document the fact that we add a bug### tag to the thread. Documenting addition of other tags depends of the tag being added and shouldn't be a "rule". For example, I add tags like "Mac OS {version}", "Windows {version}" "plugin" "add-ons", etc. to threads I happen to come across but haven't posted in when that info is missing, in case it helps other contributors give the right answer. I don't see the need to notify the OP or document it in the thread.

Looking over the list of tags, it needs major pruning. Hopefully Rachel or another admin with the right permissions can help there, to fix typos, consolidate duplicates, remove or consolidate tags for ancient Firefox versions (e.g., keep "Firefox 1.5" but remove "Firefox 1.5.0.1", etc.) and remove useless, silly tags ( "tomato"? "lollipop"? "stuff"?). Care should be taken, though, since some silly-looking tags like "x-ray-goggles" "thimble" and "popcorn-maker" are valid for Webmaker ... and "lollipop" is an Android OS version (thanks, John99).

  9. OK maybe we do not always need to annotate a thread when adding a tag such as Mac , if that is missing. But

    • I still think for breaking issues it is a good idea to add a note if for instance a potential relevant bug is identified. That helps those in the thread understand what the cause of the issue may be.
    • And I still think the thread in which a new tag is first used is an ideal thread to tag with tagcreation or whatever. That allows us to easily understand what a tag was intended for and when it was introduced.

** lollipop is an Android OS version [wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Lollipop]

Thanks for that. There are other possible useless/silly tags besides "tomato" and "stuff", like "something" "funny" and "jokes". Anyway, what's more important would be to consolidate or remove duplicate or obsolete tags, assuming admin want to prune the list. Adding an "are you sure" prompt before a new tag is added might help prevent duplicates or mis-spelled tags (file a bug?)

  11. There were some use cases that were mentioned before as well:

    1. contributors can create tags for tracking and own work flow
    2. admins want to know what is going on in the forums
    3. expertise in specific type to look at types of questions(example: crashes, windows + firefox)
    4. Bug numbers for engineering/android/more info/tracking
    5. Organic tags users can add to describe with their own language

We do not do alot with tags right now and we are figuring what we want to do with tags for the future. This is what we "think" might be useful.

No plans for change yet. There was a short mention of it, a bug was not filed (at least I cannot find one).

As a moderator if you open a thread and type in a tag that does not exist and hit add, it should create a new one.

helpdesk was added to function the same as escalate because I notice there was some being tagged with this tag as well. Both work now. bug 1056239

There were some use cases that were mentioned before as well: # contributors can create tags for tracking and own work flow # admins want to know what is going on in the forums # expertise in specific type to look at types of questions(example: crashes, windows + firefox) # Bug numbers for engineering/android/more info/tracking # Organic tags users can add to describe with their own language We do not do alot with tags right now and we are figuring what we want to do with tags for the future. This is what we "think" might be useful. No plans for change yet. There was a short mention of it, a bug was not filed (at least I cannot find one). As a moderator if you open a thread and type in a tag that does not exist and hit add, it should create a new one. ''helpdesk'' was added to function the same as escalate because I notice there was some being tagged with this tag as well. Both work now. 12. Rachel,

Topics Its probably worth mentioning again that topics were probably meant to replace or at least supplement tags.

    1. contributors can create tags for tracking and own work flow That may soon create a mess. Could just use Firefox bookmarks and tags.

    • Are these going to be
      • prefixed with the contributors name?
      • created by an Admin, or all contributors going to add to the 500 existing tags
      • Useable by everyone or just that contributor
    • What about what is displayed are all these tags going to be listed on viewing the question  ?
      • or only the generic tags for everyone, OR only the first n tags
      • it will need develpoment effort if personalised tagging is included
      • Are these tags then going to be visible to others or not.
Privacy They could be considered a part of a private profile ?
If others see them they create clutter.
Value: If others do not see them are they adding value to the forum.
    • Or are ALL contributors going to be able to create tags to add to this explosion of tags, and ALL users pick from this vast array of tags then available.

    2. admins want to know what is going on in the forums Probably similar questions to those above

    3. expertise in specific type to look at types of questions(example: crashes, windows + firefox) Topics or searches could have helped with this. We have a topic for crashes it just is one of very many topics never used, and cluttering up the advanced search options.

helpdesk tag It may have been an idea to document this for contributors. It also appears that although adding helpdesk creates a zendesk ticket it does not add an escalate tag and the escalate filter does not then pick up such an escalation.

    • So effectively it is escalating to Helpdesk but not to contributors. That it is increasing Helpdesk workload.
    • Are helpdesk taggged threads also meant to be responded to within 72 hrs by helpdesk ?

Yes but WHO created the helpdesk tag and why?

The helpdesk tag isn't mentioned in Escalation Guidelines. #helpdesk is, under the "How to participate ..." section, but that's for IRC: IRC channel asked about the question #sumo, #helpdesk, #firefox, #mobile, #thunderbird, #mdn, #etc

Escalation Guidelines says this, under How to escalate: Please Add the escalate tag to the question.

Neither Bug 1056239 - Add #helpdesk to escalation tag (which is open) nor Bug 964568 - [Helpdesk tags] Please forward the forum tags to zendesk (fixed) explain why an additional "helpdesk" tag was created.

  15. Update. Roland posted https://etherpad.mozilla.org/sumo-2015-02-02

Tagging: After speaking with Madalina and others, I'm going to write up a proposed Android only FF35 and FF36 forum only tagging experiment; if the experiment works out we'll try it with other products!

Not surer where the intended emphasis is on that is it

    • Android only FF35 and FF36
    • or Android only FF35 and FF36 forum

I am guessing it means documenting only for Android issues.

I note we do not have a tag for topcrash or variants of. But if we did that would we also add tags for bug numbers for all related bugs. It may seem something to consider, although I am not sue tagging is the best way forward here.

The current number1 top crash by the way is this one with many (>20) related bugs

Which reminds me I doubt we are sending emails with correct personal crash ID links so that crash alone is 19k poor links per week emailed out.

  18. Hi all:

I've run out of time this week and I'm away tomorrow Fri Feb 6 and Monday Feb 9 (off cross-country skiing in a rain storm oh well)

Here's the gist of my proposal which will definitely be in an etherpad someday soon :-)  :

    1. SUMO Firefox for Android forum only for FF35 and Android forum only for FF36 AND only for the first two weeks (e.g.Tuesday the 12Jan to 25Jan inclusive for FF35)
    2. Which sets of tags? Two sets of tags:
      1. an unanswered set of tags: i.e. "difficult", "repetitive", "impolite", "vague" - in an attempt to guess why folks don't answer some questions after 72 hours (we will also do some sort of thread and or survey about this)
      2. a technical set of tags to describe in a general technical way and a more specific technical way the Firefox for Android problem. this set of tags are here: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/1GusXL1UBIeinvIWuffTEUvgyfKETS-axM3qF2imPtCM/edit#gid=354101726
    3. I don't expect anybody but me to do the tagging for this experiment
    4. But of course comments and feedback welcome!

See you all when I get back to work on Tuesday!

    Cheers!
