Can't post images in Firefox support

  1. I've never tried to post images in the Mozilla support forums (AFAIK). Whether the option to include them is offered is a little sketchy, depending on the page.

But on a recent post, I tried to include one from my HDD (V. small jpg) by:

    • editing my OP from a day ago, and / or another reply made by me in last 5 min.
    • creating another new reply & adding the image (not going back thru edit).

The option to add images is there. It allows browsing my HDD & selecting an image. The image name I select then appears next to the browse button on forum page.

When I hit Preview or Submit, no image is posted & the image name is gone.

Tried it several times, several ways. Normally, it's not a problem on other forums that allow direct image posting (vs. link to a 3rd party hosting site).

  2. Can you upload the image to imgur.com and post the link here? Our devs can try to reproduce it using that picture.

But if you're saying you get that problem no matter what image you try to upload then that's worrisome. I'll try test uploading some images in a thread of mine.

  3. 1) in this SUMO forum, there's no option to "add image" - at least in the "post a reply" UI.

    2) I was able to add the image in my forum post, using a 3rd party, but it doesn't work exactly as it should or the way most forums do, that allow embedding images or even inserting the link to image.

There were a couple of problems. See my comments at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1010897#answer-605044

One issue is, embedding images (from 3rd parties) here doesn't work the same as most forums. Which is OK, except avg users don't have any immediately accessible instructions.

Without specific, easy to follow instructions, they won't keep after it until figure out how to do it (so they, the volunteers & others seeking help will suffer).

On support.mozilla.org, copying the usual host's image path, with brackets surrounding the path (w/ "IMG" and slash Image in the brackets), doesn't embed the image; only inserts a link. And the closing square brackets w/ the "/" followed by "IMG" is converted by forum software to a live link. (that's why I wrote it as "slash Image" in the explanation, vs. /IMG.

The latter is written (in my compose screen) w/ a left bracket, then forward slash, then "IMG", then right bracket.

I was able to embed the host's image in the linked forum topic, using html image code (which most users won't know / have. ("<" img src=), then <>, w/ image path between the inequality signs, then "alt=>". Above, I had to add some spacing & quotes, so code would show up in this post (not an image).

  4. Yes, looks like you did this:

There is an option to add media in the forum posts, but the "Browse" button at the bottom of a question thread. It appends it to the last part of the post, but I believe there is a file size limit.

  5. If you edit the post to add an image then it can take considerable time before the image(s) appear, so just be patient and check the post a 'few' minutes later and do not add the same image again or it it show multiple times if you check it later. This only happens if you edit the reply and not when you post a new reply. This is probably similar to other cache issue where a new reply doesn't appear on the index page immediately or if you filter the index page for solutions then the tread is marked as having a solution, but if you open the thread to see who got the solution then no reply is marked yet.

  6. Yes, I added that (as I detailed, because of problems / oddities encountered).

If you edit the post to add an image then it can take considerable time before the image(s) appear

Really? Define "considerable." No msg about what to expect? Kind of leaves users hangin'? I'll try that & post back. Still not a good way - confusing. Most people coming here don't have cor-el's knowledge. On the old pickup, pump the accelerator exactly 2.5 times. Pull the choke out 3/4 of the way...

This only happens if you edit the reply and not when you post a new reply.

By "this," do you mean it takes a while for direct upload images to appear only when editing replies, or that they may appear multiple times if posted > once?

Because, I tried a "new reply," & the direct uploaded image still didn't appear. But I didn't wait minutes before re-checking.

Also, shouldn't be a problem w/ that specific file's size - it was only 28 KB - a std. jpg. I later tried a different image - a V. small .gif & another jpg. Neither indicated they would actually be uploaded (at some point).

I have no problems directly uploading images on other forums.

As I say, there are no handy instructions for this. A help ? mark or 'i' info tool tip would be useful, by the "add images" label. There is no upload image option on new topics.

  7. Note you can write this by using nowiki tags

nowiki tags do not prevent direct links only generated links and other markup.

    • These are not links if the nowiki tags are used
      • <nowiki> [[markup chart]]</nowiki>
        gives [[markup chart]]
      • <nowiki> bp-6fa1a51a-44ef-4076-aaf5-4ac992140611 </nowiki>

  8. Thanks - I'll keep that in mind. After a good bit of testing, it's obvious there's something about my everyday Fx install - not letting me upload images on this forum, but I can on others. I'm positive of the latter. I just tried it on https://forum.userstyles.org & it works fine. Still won't work here.

Cookies from Google, having them as default search or enabling safe browsing aren't required to upload images here, are they? :D

Even with nothing blocked in Fx from the mozilla site except maybe 3rd party cookies, images still aren't uploading - but will in IE (IE isn't allowing 3rd party cookies).

I rolled IE out of storage & logged into the support forum. I could upload images immediately using the Browse button.

Went back to Fx - disabled anything I thought might be interfering. I thought it then allowed uploading an image one, but couldn't duplicate it. Maybe I dozed off & dreamed it worked.

There are no active "security / privacy" type addons. But something could've gotten changed in prefs that mozilla.org wants, which other forums don't. Also, NO active plugins.

Short of a new profile, I'm not sure what else might work. There must be IS something different about the process or requirements for direct uploading images on mozilla.org than other forums.

  9. I tried another Fx profile & uploading images worked. All that shows is there's something in the profile that doesn't work on Mozilla's site, that other sites aren't bothered by.

Ironic that the official Firefox support forum is the only one this doesn't work on... or is it? With all the same addons / settings, I have no problems uploading images on Google sites. Wha...?!?

It's not worth pursuing - for a single forum out of dozens that doesn't upload images. At least not re-config'g a new profile.

  10. Hi Joebt, for diagnostic purposes, how far do you get in the uploading process?

    (1) Does the Browse button launch a window showing files on your computer?

    (2) After selecting an image in the dialog and returning to the page, does Firefox appear to be uploading it immediately?

    (3) Does a thumbnail of the image render successfully above the Browse button? Or does it appear to be rendering but stall (I've seen this occasionally, and am never sure what it means).

  11. sjcher2000, Obviously, something's different on what mozilla.org wants / needs to upload images directly, that doesn't bother other forums. That fact is really the key.

The fact that a clean profile made uploading images work, likely shows some addon or prefs.js entry problem. I'd tried disabling every addon & restarting Fx for this problem, but sometimes just disabling them isn't enough.

    1) yes - have no problem browsing to, selecting a file. After clicking OK in "Browse To", the filename appears on the forum's upload UI. (but disappears after clicking upload the image, or "submit" or what ever).

    2) Not exactly (hard to say). As said, the file name appears instantly in forum's upload UI (just above Submit button), but that's it. IOW, it accepts the file name I chose. With my connection & computer, there's normally no delay in uploading small files to determine if (in this case), "Firefox appear to be uploading it...."

    3) No "preview" of the image appears. But, in IE, it does render immediately after clicking OK after choosing a file off my HDD.

In Firefox (same profile, same addons & settings - that failed here), on other forums using this direct upload method, a "preview" image often appears instantly after selecting from the HDD / clicking OK.

Some forums don't display uploaded images, until you do a final submission of replies or OP. Those few forums may not display image after selecting from HDD - or - in reply Preview (if used).

In either case, on any other forum I recall, the file name and image don't just disappear, w/o any indication something was wrong. Only problems / errors I've had on other forums, a message appeared - like, "incorrect format," or "file size too large," etc.

  12. I figured out the problem. I had a hunch the whole time you had DOM Storage disabled. I tested that theory out today and I was right.

If you have dom.storage.enabled set to false in about:config, that will cause images to fail to upload.

With that pref set to false, all the symptoms described by Joe appear. No preview of the image, after selecting the image only the filename of the image will be shown in the forum upload box next to the "Browse" button and lastly, submitting the reply will not upload the image.

Please set dom.storage.enabled to true. :)

  14. Noah, right you are. I tested it & it works.

However, brings up a question (for Mozilla). Why would a 20 KB image need DOM storage?

I might enable it temporarily if there's a critical need to post an image here, otherwise it'll stay off. Yes, there are a few addons that will clear DOM storage on demand, but such addons must be sought out.

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dom.storage.enabled

"The Web Applications 1.0 specification defines a mechanism allowing web pages to store information with a web browser (similar to cookies) called “client-side session and persistent storage.” Although use of session storage is subject to a user’s cookie preferences, this preference allows it to be disabled entirely." Possible values and their effects True Enable client-side session and persistent storage for web pages (Default)

Thanks Alice - for bug link. I may add a comment.
