New Badges!!! - Help to elaborate!!!

  1. Hello, i was talking with Ralph about update the forum badges, and he said to me to share with everybody here, so we hope new ideas and critics about the idea, i already elaborate some badges.

The name of the badges that I already elaborated are suggestions, If someone have other ideas of names I will thank, or if someone have other ideas for new badges, please comment

My idea is incentivate the new members to help other users and bring new members.

I didn't elaborate badges for Awesome League contributors because I don't know what can be counted, Ralph said that Roland Tanglao is the condinator of this area, maybe he can help with Awesome League Bagdes

  2. I got an e-mail about Alice posting something but I guess she deleted it....

IMO, I actually think this is a bit overkill with all these new badges being created. I get the idea of giving it to new contributors to make them feel good, but these new badges, especially all of these is just a bit much.

Here are my thoughts: Names can be changed.

    Forum badges:

    • Junior Technician - has 10 solutions (or answers?)
    • Senior Technician - has 100 solutions (or answers?)
    • Master Technician (?) - has 500 solutions (answers not solutions...or both(?))
    • Programmer or Systems Engineer(without ideas) - complete 10000 solutions (only exists because of the cor-el lol) This one isn't necessary. We should stop at Master Technician
    Especial badges:
    • Member of the Family Firefox - necessary have all Welcomes badges(all categories) and 1 post in the Forum Contributor
    • Knowledgeable Knowledge Base - necessary have Comunicator and Senior Technician badge

    • Cintributor Exemplar - necessary Senior Editor, Senior Technician and Senior Translator

We don't need this. Like I said, too much.

    Translations:

    • Junior Translator - complete 10 approved translations
    • Senior Translator - complete 100 approved translations
    • Master Translator - complete 500 approved translations

    The rest should be gone

    Same concept:

    • Junior - Complete 5
    • Senior - Complete 100
    • Master - Complete 500

Yes, I asked something along the lines of "what's the point of all these badges" but decided to do some research first and deleted my post.

    I looked through

.... but I'm still don't really see the point of it all. I don't contribute here for badges or Karma points (I don't hear much talk about Karma lately).

  4. Alice,

I completely agree with you. However, I think the main gist of it is to welcome new contributors, mostly. I don't care for badges or Karma (I don't think anyone uses it anymore) but I think these resources should be going somewhere else instead of building badges. Rephrase: Too many badges. the ones we have are fine.

I think we should let Madalina or even Roland give us some information. Added [attn:Madalina/Roland]

  5. Hey Diego,

Thanks for posting these suggestions. I love the basic idea of making badges for achieving certain "levels" in SUMO. It's a little like a basic game concept, and it reminds me of the fun times I had in the mozillaZine forums a decade ago where this concept was used in the title under your user name. The Ubuntu forums have something similar.

To answer Alice's question about the point of all these badges, I think the point is to make it a bit more playful and fun to be a part of the community, as well as making that initial "hook" for new contributors more obvious. I agree we should go through the list and settle on something we think represents that, and I would suggest that we build on each other's ideas rather than striking things out of others lists already.

Madalina probably has thoughts on the right balance too, so I'll try not to interfere much here -- just wanted to encourage the basic concept because I like playfulness in community forums. :)

I don't see the connection between having badges under your user profile page or in my user profile page and "playfulness in community forums".

Anyway, I found https://blog.mozilla.org/sumo/2013/10/25/open-badges-1-0-minimum-awesome-achievement/ ...which includes the following, if anyone is interested:

Got some ideas for future SUMO badges? Please add them to the future SUMO badge etherpad.

  7. Hi guys,

I think Diego's ideas were just suggestions to get the discussion started :) And we should build on that in order to have an idea on what we want to do in the future.

When we first launched badges in SUMO a lot of people asked for more and there was an ongoing discussion on what other badges we could have (I cannot find it right now). We still have a debt in issuing badges for the people who helped with Live Chat support and badges for the “OG”s (the original SUMO gurus who contributed from 2007-2009).

Some people love the idea of badges and for some people they are not so important. That's absolutely fine. I personally think badges are cool and they are a nice (visual) way to recognize the contributions of many awesome people. Of course we don't want to have badges for everything and we want to recognize outstanding contributions.

Are the badges that we already have enough? Maybe so but maybe we can do better. That doesn't mean we will overload our profile with all kinds of things, we just need to discuss and decide on what's meaningful.

Diego Victor thanks so much for all your ideas, these are all very interesting! Maybe you can add them in the "Future SUMO badges" etherpad that Alice was posting above. There are already a few ideas there so maybe we can match them with some of yours.

Issuing new badges is currently on hold due to other priorities right now but we can already start thinking on what we want to have. Roland can help us there.

  8. Madalina sums things up better than I could.

Alice, what I meant with playfulness was more the choice of titles that were proposed at the top of this thread. I like that playfulness, and people who contribute and check other people's profiles out would presumably take notice at random occasions. Fun stuff if you ask me! But, like Madalina says, not for everyone, which is totally fine.

    Cheers, David

  9. I forgot to say, those badges are onlymy ideas, I didn't know how many badges are enough, so I listed all my ideas, please help with the names, after we create good names i will talk with Ralph about the badge's list and I will post in the Future SUMO badges etherpad, OK??

    Thanks Moses for suggestion.

    Junior, Senior and Master.

But the distance between them, shouldn't be less? For example:

    10 >> 100 >> 250 0r 50 >>125 >>200

    Thanks Madalisan for the support!!!

  10. Hi Diego,

Thanks so much for initiating this thread, and for your time spent creating these badge suggestions for an initial brainstorming! I personally really like where this is going, but I can also understand that others may not share the same excitement about badge rewards.

I had a quick IRC meeting with Moses, Noah, Feer56 to discuss these ideas and it was very insightful!

To add to the discussion - from my personal opinion, I don't think that there is such thing as too many badges, as long as they are meaningful and well-thought out. As some of you have already mentioned, I believe that that if the badge requirements are interesting, it can provide an additional "gamification" to SUMO, making it a bit more fun. The ideas that Diego Victor shared were a starting point of discussion, and it's always helpful to provide constructive feedback for refining these ideas as a community.

It's true that there are already badges for each year of contribution to AoA, Forum, and L10n, but they offer no other distinction in the quality and/or amount of contribution. This means that a person that contributes 1,000 times to one of those areas, will receive the same badge recognition as someone who contributes only once in that year.

Having different levels of badges would give new and existing contributors something to aspire for, in a playful way. The goal that I believe we would be trying to achieve, would be that new contributors could get on the hook quickly and recognized quickly, while veteran active contributors would get special recognition with shiny online (and possibly even real) badges.

The requirements for each badge would have to be refined to accomplish a fun gamifying badge-reward system, and it's not an exact science, so it's definitely good to have the input of everyone.

During our IRC meeting, Moses also suggested funny badges, and I think this is also a great idea! I think it's in the best interest of SUMO and all the contributors involved to keep a light hearted tone and making sure to have fun in everything we do.

I'll say it again as a friendly reminder - remember to have fun in everything we do! :)

    Cheers!!

    - Ralph

  11. hi all:

[i will chime in with more specific stuff about badges in this thread but for this post i'll just focus on badges and recognition in general.]

Just chiming in (finally!) i am the badge driver for SUMO. Madalina will always be involved in anything community facing but she's too busy with Rosana's move to Reps to spend much time on recognition and badges!

I agree with David Tenser and Ralph Daub of course :-)

Badges and recognition in general is something Mozilla needs to improve and do more of and will be doing more of. Michelle Maurovich is leading the Mozilla wide recognition team and the badges sub-team is lead by Carla Cassili and Emily Goglioski and i am member of the badges sub-team.

Finally big thanks to everybody on this thread especially Diego who started this thread!

    Cheeers!
