Rendering bug with IE10 update discussion

  1. Hi all,

I've been seeing this bug and as you can see some of the comments are discussing a workaround. I would think that discussion would be more appropriate in our forums, but wanted to get some feedback from you guys before suggesting it.

Kensie, This bug was reported sometime ago (November last year), and the workarounds a pretty well known:

    1. Uninstall the update (which means you can't install IE10)
    2. Disable HWA in Firefox

I believe there was already a thread about this in the contributor forums, but I may be mistaken.

  3. Right,

My point was more giving people who are discussing it in bug a more appropriate place to go. I was thinking a support forum thread, rather than a contributors thread. Usually these types of discussions are sent to newsgroups/mailing lists but I don't think that is the most appropriate place as people have to follow the whole group, not just the thread that matters to them.

So not so much to determine the workaround, but to give people a place to discuss it, help each other apply it etc. that we can promote in the bug to help move people over and keep the bug for discussion of resolving the issue.

Correct, after all........ this is our forum, isn't it ?

Absolutely :) Let's keep in mind though, we shouldn't hash out the workarounds in a support forum thread, but find ones that are about this issue, and post the possible solutions in one easy to read comment, making it easier for users to simply find and apply the workaround. Any discussions about "does this work", when they are between us and not in a direct user to helper conversation, should take place here (decide on the remedy here and provide it to the forums).

That makes sense on the one hand, but on the other hand doesn't this kind of thing happen on the forum anyway, eg when a user comes with a new issue? Don't we also have tools built in to help bump up the useful comments apart from the noise?

If we do only try and determine workarounds in the contributors forum we're cutting out people from the discussion who might be able to test and help. We don't want to require those people to sign up as contributors just to deal with one topic, I imagine they might be more likely to just stay in the bug if that is the case.

This is a bit different situation, as this is an old problem with already known workarounds. Yes as new issues come in we have to do the troubleshooting process in the threads, but in this case we already know the workarounds, so there isn't much sense in trying to hash it out more in threads (unless some development comes along). But absolutely, new issues should totally be worked out in the thread they are reported in.

  8. Ok! I think we're on the same page.

  9. I did start the thread here -https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/959581

But I'm thinking that this would be a useful thing to have regularly, somewhere to catalog and discuss workarounds for bugs, but outside of the bug.

It would be cool to have a workarounds forum that would tie back to the bug, the title could be limited to bug numbers, eg. It could be a good in between step rather than having a wiki article for what could be a risky workaround, but to at least have the information in an easier to find and manage location than in random bug comments.
