Flash 11.4

  1. more options

Hello Everybody! Thank you for sticking through with us on these ongoing Flash 11.3 issues. They have been frustrating for us and you (and users) and we want to thank you all for the help you have been! We have some news that may' 'help.

Tomorrow (August 21st) Adobe is slated to release Flash 11.4. In this update they claim to fix most, if not all, of the issues introduced in 11.3. Our testing does show a decrease in the amount of crashes and hangs. However, our test group is small, so we aren't very confident that this update is going to fix these issues, or even make them worse. So for now, this is the track for this update:

    • Tomorrow is the release of 11.4. We will Not change our documentation yet to urge users with 11.3 difficulties to upgrade, but wait to see if wider crash stats and SUMO verify this fixes the 11.3 problems.
    • However, if you see users on the forums are resolving their 11.3 problems with 11.4, please let us know (post in this thread). At the same time, keep an eye on any new problems with this update
    • By the end of this week, we will evaluate how effective this update is. If it fixes many of the 11.3 problems, we will update our documentation to begin suggesting users upgrade to the newer version.

Please bear with us while we work on these issues, and hopefully we will have a good long-term solution soon!

For users with Flash 11.3 issues, the current recommendation in the Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again article (just updated yesterday) is to downgrade to Flash 10.3.

Looks like Flash 10.3 was also updated today. Both new versions are available for direct download from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html even though the Flash Player 11.3 and Flash Player 10.3 headings haven't been updated yet which is now updated with the new version numbers, 11.4.402.265 and 10.3.183.23

  4. On posting information on the support forum about updating to Flash 11.4: You should take into account users who may have disabled Protected Mode in Flash 11.3. Example, from https://support.mozilla.org/questions/932486#answer-362010

Flash Player 11.4 is now released. It includes fixes for many issues as well as a security update (see Adobe's Announcement and the release notes for details.)

Alice, that is correct, the Flash 11.4 update will NOT re-enable protected mode. This has to be done manually.

As of now, it is looking like Flash 11.4 is not any worse than 11.3, however, we aren't seeing a significant trend that it fixes many of the issues in 11.3. We are still trying to gather more feedback, so any insights you guys (and gals) have is greatly appreciated :)

  7. Older versions of Trusteer Rapport (an application promoted by some banks for malware protection) may cause the Flash 11.4 or 11.3 plugin to crash. This was just reported in the Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again article discussion forum:

  8. Thanks Alice. We are looking into this right now. Do we know which versions cause the issue and where the cutoff point is? That would help us to gauge the issue and figure out next steps. I'll take a look at those links after my next meeting.

  16. I still haven't found any information on what actually got fixed in Flash 11.4.402.278 but I did find an interesting article dated September 20, 2012:

    Quote:

    Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.278

According to Adobe’s Release Notes for Flash Player 11.4, this version doesn’t exist yet – they still point to 11.4.402.265 as the latest version, even though the update has been out for 2 days now.

According to Adobe’s Security Bulletins for Flash Player, the last bulletin was posted in August and refers to 11.4.402.265 – not the latest version.

However, Flash Player Support Center states that the new 11.4.402.278 “contains fixes for critical vulnerabilities identified in Security Bulletin APSB12-19″ which is the August bulletin noted above…

Either the update last month did not actually fix (all of) the security vulnerabilities (which is not good news as it means Flash Player has been at risk for weeks) or Adobe have made a mistake and there are no security updates in the latest version?

It’s impossible to know for sure but it is probably safest to assume that the new version released this week does include security updates – and should therefore be installed. It may include other fixes but, if so, Adobe aren’t saying.

    Makes you wonder.
