[Proposal] Lock threads and remove tags
-
Hi everyone!
Working on the forum sometimes we need to lock threads, and this happens for several reasons: duplicated threads, no content, bad behavior and so on.
Particularly the first 2 ones, represent threads that we don't necessarily want to count in reports or have them messing around in search results, so my proposal is to remove every tag of locked threads.
This could be done manually or automatically. As starter, I'm not confident that we want to do it in every case (they may be relevant threads that we don't want to "hide") so I vote for manual removal and follow up with auto removal if we find out that none of the locked threads should have tags.
In any case, this is a simple thing that will help us to better understand the forum while removing some noise.

Yeah, I agree, it makes sense to remove the noise from the tags, especially since we are going to rely on them more and more as we move forward

I don't see a reason why not. For duplicate threads, it might be better to figure out a good way to merge threads.

Are most duplicate threads caught at an early stage and linked to the other thread when being locked, if so there may not be much need to sort out a way to merge them. If not merging may not be easy anyway.
Of course if you are talking about duplicated subject matter that is something else entirely, and I imagine is unavoidable. (Especially remembering current guidelines to not post in another's thread even if it appears to be the same subject)
Create one thread and only one thread for each subject you want to discuss. For support requests, do not re-use existing threads started by others, even if they are seemingly on the same subject. ( FromMozilla Support rules and guidelines)

Here I'm talking exclusively about exact-or-almost-exact threads created from the same users...either by mistake or to create awareness. Duplicated topics from different users are "ok-ish" because it creates awareness about broad issues.
It's all a low level solution for the proposal I made several weeks ago about linking-merging threads feature: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forums/contributors/707664
If we all agree on this, we all should start applying the process and perhaps documenting in the "how can we collaborate" document for Moderators.
Next steps should include a better solution of the merging as part of the UI/UX redesign that Crystal is working on.
The important factor is that we want to answer less "obviously duplicated" questions even from different users but still, don't loose the aggregated data that multiple questions represent. I'm confident that we can design something simple and effective.

I would really move a away from merging threads. It creates a lot of issues, especially since we don't have a pure discussion forum, but really a Q/A site. Instead we should look into tagging to mark threads as duplicates, even if only to understand what questions we are dealing with on a daily basis.

Although going nowhere a bug exists for this and i think the bug should now be wontfixed as I say in another related thread /forums/contributors/708453?page=2#post-51092before someone picks it up and actions it.
