Thunderbird 60: no persistent indicator for new mail?

Up to now I have been using the FireTray add-on, this is no longer working in Thunderbird 60 even if I enable legacy add-ons. I do believe that Thunderbird is making a catastrophic mistake by cutting itself off from a large part of its add-on ecosystem, but I don’t want to debate that here. What I think is really missing is some form of indicator that new e-mail has arrived (not unread but new) that is not transient. If I leave my screen for a while with a minimised TB process running, I will now have to maximise the window and check all accounts (actually, all folders that might receive new mail via filtering) to see if I have missed a new mail notification while I was away. The same applies if I was at the screen but focused on something else. With FireTray I would have seen a change in the tray icon. Now it seems that I have to check the folder pane for a colour change in the names of all candidate accounts or folders. I cannot believe that TB developers want to force us to do constantly inspect the window, so I’d like to know how I am supposed to be able to check if new email has arrived without having to maximise the window. Any suggestions?

Hello, I have Win8 with black borders, so I can't read and see inactive tabs at all. (http://i.imgur.com/9feS5wN.png ) I want to change the text color and make it so that the hover effect is displayed at all times. (http://i.imgur.com/wRubuQ3.png )

I found a bunch of different things to do, like "tab:not([selected="true"]" ".tabmail-tab" but none of it works. So which identifier (or whatever it's called) can I use? And how can I achieve the hover effect?

I hope someone can help, thanks in advance :)

Edit: I got the hover effect working, it's in a post on the bottom of the page.

Whenever I log on to my bank's web site, I'm sent an audible signal that invites me to start a chat session with a bank agent. The problem is that the audible alert is so loud that it startles me. This is very annoying. I called the bank's help line and was told there was no way they could adjust the sound volume. I would like to know if it's possible for Firefox to decrease the volume for that web site.

If I mark a message as Unread, it appears in the list of messages in boldface type. But I am finding it very hard to distinguish those in bold from other messages that have been read and are not bold. Is there anything in advanced settings that would allow me to change the fill colour in the listing box, or perhaps the colour of the type, in order to distinguish unread messages more visibly from those I have read? Thanks!

Hello!

I'm using Thunderbird 52.5.0 (64-bit) on Debian Stretch.

So I am following https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-search-engine-open-search to add a custom search engine to Thunderbird. (I want to add DDG as instructed at https://duck.co/help/desktop/thunderbird but for now I am following the support article.)

This is the google.xml https://pastebin.com/yRaXyJXb But I still can't see Google search engine in Preferences -> General -> Default Search Engine list. Am I missing something?

Any pointers will be really helpful.

Thank you!

As described in [question] I am unable to install addons in Thunderbird: when attempting to install an addon, either via the in-app browser or via a file, a pop-up window appears for which "Add" and "Cancel" buttons do nothing (there is no way to move or remove the window without killing the process).

I am opening this question as this problem still persists over a year and many versions later.

Monday afternoon I received a work-related email. I crafted a reply, and wanted to have it sent in the morning, so I pressed "Ctrl-Shift-Enter" to Send Later, which used had worked in the past.

The Send Later dialogue box did not appear, and I saw that the message was moved to my Outbox. Without any Send Now indication, I figured I'd just send it at that time.

The Reply arrow/symbol was on it, and I saw it in my Sent folder, so I figured it was sent.

Two days later, my client had not replied. She's always replied within 24 hours.

Wondering if she received my reply, I replied again, to her same email, sending it normally. The Reply arrow was still there, and that one was in my Sent folder too.

Today, my client wrote, implying she did not receive either message. How can I know if my message is really being sent? Is this a known issue? If so, is there a fix?

I have two groups of email addresses that I sent group mail to. If I want to exclude one or more people in a group due to the content or something but do not want to remove them from the group, how do I do this? I also forward mail to these groups and if one of the people in the group has sent me a message that I want to sent to the group, I want to remove the senders name before forwarding the message but do not want to remove the sender from the group. In my old email software when I add the groups to the message I could double click to show the mail addresses and remove any that I did not want to include for the current message, without removing them for the group.

I have the following constellation: Client A uses Windows10 and Outlook Client B uses Ubuntu and Thunderbird Client C uses Windows10 and Outlook All mail clients are set up to use POP3 to access the same Gmail account.

If client A downloads emails using Outlook, Client C downloads the same emails again. The same email exists on Client A and Client C. This is what is needed.

If Client B downloaded the emails from Gmail before the other clients accessed the mail account, Client A and/or Client C don't get them anymore. So the emails only exist on Client B.

How can I set up Thunderbird so that it downloads the emails but leaves them in a state that the other clients get them, too? I thought if I configure Thunderbird to leave the emails on the server that this is what will do the trick. It does leave them on the server but seems to mark them as downloaded. Can this be avoided/switched off?

If I log on to Gmail via the web front end I still see the messages in the inbox and they are marked unread.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Peter

Hi There -

Well, in Thunderbird 60, my add-on, "select inbox" is disabled.

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/select-inbox/

I have just one Inbox, so when I open TB 60, I want it to always open in the Inbox view.

Will TB 60.0.1 correct this, or do I need another way. If so, kindly advise.

Many thanks! :)

I have set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to TRUE in both Thunderbird and Betterbird.

I have created the file C:\Users\MYNAME\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\r2v9k1zw.default\chrome\userChrome.css

I have successfully entered css into that file that work as expected in Thunderbird v115.12 and has for the past several versions. But I have NOT been able to do anything in that file that works with BetterBird. In fact, using the inspector, I don't see userChrome.css even being loaded! I have also tried starting the file with '@namespace html url(“http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”)' but that makes no difference either.

How do I get BetterBird to recognize the userChrome.css file?

For reasons I don't understand, TBird has suddenly changed its behavior in displaying plain-text messages as they are being composed. It used to be that TBird would wrap long lines to the window width, whatever that happened to be. If for example, I reduced the width of the window, TBird would automatically rewrap the lines to fit.

Now, however, TBird uses a specific width (NOT character count) and wraps all lines to that width. If I reduce the window width, a horizontal scroll bar appears and the lines do not rewrap. If I increase the window width, TBird continues to wrap the lines at its chosen width, leaving blank space to the right of the lines. I've made no changes to about:config.

Why is it doing this, and how can I stop it? Settings from about:config are:

  mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width; true
  mail.wrap_long_lines; true
  mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support; false
  mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed; true
  plain_text.wrap_long_lines; false

I've tried TBird with the last setting = true, but this didn't help. I've also tried TBird with addons disabled; again, no better.
