They may be caused by an incompatible add-on. Try running Firefox in safe mode, this will disable add-ons and can be used to see if an add-on is causing the problem. To access safe mode in Firefox 4, click the Firefox button, then select the Help sub-menu and choose "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". In the dialog box that appears when starting safe mode, click on the "Continue in Safe Mode" button.

If the grey bar disappears in safe mode, follow the procedure in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to identify the culprit.
