Bookmarks disappeared over night?
I reinstalled windows yesterday. When I installed firefox and signed it, everything was fine. However, this morning, it seems to have removed 80% of my bookmarks. When I try to restore from the bookmarks yesterday, it just gives me the ones that I have this morning. I had tons and tons of resource bookmarks for my work that would be almost impossible to re-find in some cases due to the current state of search engines. Is there any way to salvage them? It seems like sync believes they never existed, but it DID sync them yesterday??? Please help.

Hi, it sounds like you are familiar with the Restore menu. When you look at the list on the Restore menu, it should show the item count for that backup (items = bookmarks + folders + separators). Do the backups seem to change drastically at some point in the number of items?
Ref. Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
If all the backups shown on the Restore menu are too small, it's possible your Firefox started up in a different profile. Please check the first section of the following article on how to check for other profiles: Recover lost or missing Bookmarks.
Any progress so far?
No, they're all the same number, and there are no other profiles aside from the default with the four basic bookmarks.
Are you using Sync?
You can check if you have the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case the Refresh feature in Firefox has been used and a new profile has been created.
I am using sync, and I do not have old firefox data, because I reinstalled windows.
Could you check for orphaned profile folders using this shortcut path in the Windows search box or the address bar of Windows File Explorer:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
That shortcut address expands to this hidden folder:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Do you see any folders there that are not listed on the about:profiles page? If so, do their bookmarkbackups folder have any bigger files (the number of items is coded into the file name right after the creation date)?
There was no orphaned profiles, I did check before.
However, all my bookmarks came back just a few minutes ago with no interference on my part. It added to the ones I already had, so I have repeats now for the few that I had had remaining. I am not sure why this happened or what caused them to disappear or return, because I had forced it to sync multiple times over the last few days.
I am having the exact same problem. All of my bookmarks just disappeared yesterday. I still have my old computer with the bookmarks still intack so I followed the manual getting a backup file of the bookmarks on a flashdrive as an HTML file and put the file on the newer computer desktop. When I try to import them it say the file has no information in it. I then went to my desktop and opened the file and there were all the bookmarks and they are .HTML so I don't understand the problem now. Just to clarify, the newer computer doesn't have any synched bookmark backups on it. I REALLY NEED those bookmarks back. Please HELP ME I have been working on this for hours to no avail. Lythacore, did you ever get your bookmarks back fully?

Hmm, if I create a completely empty file, I don't get that error message, so there must be a more specific issue. Does it refer to site icon (favicon) data, urls, titles, or some other expected data?
After trying import, could you check whether there is a new "Imported Bookmarks" folder in either of these places:
- bottom of the Bookmarks Menu
- bottom of Other Bookmarks
The left column of the Library window probably is the easiest place to check for this.
Jscher2000- The exact wording when I try to restore the backup from my old computer to the new says: "The file doesn't include any bookmark data. Pick another file." I'm afraid I am screwing things up worse from trying everything and more. I only know enough to be dangerous. I hate to screw up the newer computer before I even get it fully set up. I have looked for the new Imported Bookmarks folder in all of the places you mention. The left column of the Library window is completely blank. I'm officially stuck in a big ole' mess.
