How to add the bookmarks icon to my home page?

The bookmarks icon star does not appear on my homepage or menu bar and I cannot find a way to add it. Presently to see my bookmarks I need to click on the menu and then 'Bookmarks' and then 'Desktop Bookmarks' and then 'Bookmarks Menu' to finally see my list of bookmarks. Thoughts?
