How can I save email attachments without changing the format of the documents?

I am having difficulty with email attachments! When I download attachments, the name of each document gets changed to "viewattachment" instead of retaining the original file name. Furthermore, when I try to open the attachment, it asks me every time, "Do you want to open this file?" How can I download my attachments and still retain the original file names and the original document format (whether it be Word, pdf, etc.)?
