Microsoft Silverlight is a plugin used by some websites to display multimedia content. This article describes how to check whether you have Silverlight installed, and if not, how to install it.

Checking for Silverlight

To determine whether you have the Silverlight plugin installed, visit Microsoft.com's Silverlight installation page.

If Silverlight is installed, you will see a message with your Silverlight version, such as The version of Silverlight installed is: Silverlight 3.

Installing Silverlight

If you do not have Silverlight installed, follow the instructions on Microsoft's Silverlight Detailed Installation Instructions.

If you do not have Silverlight installed, follow the instructions at Go-Mono.com's Moonlight installation page. Moonlight is an open source implementation of Microsoft Silverlight for Unix-like systems.

Uninstalling Silverlight

To uninstall Silverlight, follow the instructions on Microsoft's Silverlight Uninstall page.

To uninstall a plugin, see Manually uninstalling a plugin.

Troubleshooting

Silverlight does not work in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 Beta will run as a 64-bit application on Mac OS 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Because Silverlight is 32-bit, earlier versions of the plugin will fail to load and sites that depend on Silverlight (such as Netflix) will not work in Firefox 4 Beta.

To fix it, update your installation of Silverlight to the latest version using Microsoft.com's Silverlight installation page.
