Use Firefox VPN in Firefox

Firefox VPN is a Beta (experimental) feature that enhances your privacy in Firefox by routing your web traffic through a VPN server, concealing your real IP as well as adding a layer of encryption to your communications. It is completely free of charge and is available to a small set of users chosen at random, for a limited time.

How does it work?

When the Firefox VPN is active, Firefox will route your web traffic through Mozilla-managed VPN servers, giving you additional privacy within Firefox. It does not protect your entire device or other apps outside of Firefox.

In order to use this feature, you need to sign in to (or create) your Mozilla account. If you want to opt in to this experiment, follow the onboarding process below.

  1. Look for the VPN setup prompt in the top-right corner of your Firefox toolbar and click Next to begin.
    • This prompt may appear twice. If you choose “No thanks” on the second prompt, the VPN icon will be removed from the toolbar.

Note that if you are not interested in the Firefox VPN, you can also remove the VPN icon at any time by right-clicking it and selecting “Remove from Toolbar”.
  2. Follow the instructions on the page that will open to Sign in or create a Mozilla account. Once you finish, the Firefox VPN panel will open, allowing you to connect. If you don’t see the VPN panel after signing in, click the VPN icon in your toolbar to open it.

  3. Use the toggle to activate Firefox VPN. Web traffic originated in Firefox will be routed through the most performant VPN location available, within the United States.

Common questions

Can I use Firefox normally with VPN on?

Yes! Your browsing experience will continue as normal. There are no speed or usage limits when Firefox VPN is on.

Why can’t I access some websites with Firefox VPN?

Some websites block VPN traffic or may ask you to sign in before granting access (e.g. Reddit and YouTube). If a site isn’t working correctly and signing in doesn’t solve the issue, you can temporarily turn off the VPN and try again. If this happens consistently please let us know, at Mozilla Support.

Does Firefox VPN protect my entire device?

No. Firefox VPN only protects traffic within Firefox—it doesn’t cover other apps or background services. For full-device protection, you can upgrade to Mozilla VPN.

How do I turn it off or remove it?

You can disable Firefox VPN at any time. Right-click the VPN icon in the Firefox toolbar and select Remove from Toolbar. This removes it from your browser, but you can re-enable it later from the Add-ons and Themes menu if you change your mind.

How does Mozilla handle my data?

We collect only the technical data needed to keep Firefox VPN reliable and secure. For example, we may log whether a connection succeeded or failed, or record that your account used 2 GB of data on a certain day.

This helps us improve performance, prevent abuse, and plan for growth. Logs linked to your account are automatically deleted after 3 months. Importantly, Firefox VPN never logs the websites you visit or the content of your communications.

For long-term planning, Mozilla keeps overall bandwidth statistics, but these are aggregated across all users and cannot be traced back to you.

What happens if I subscribe to Mozilla VPN?

The Firefox VPN is free and browser-only. If you choose to subscribe to Mozilla VPN, you’ll get device-level protection, including:

  • Encrypted traffic across all apps and services, not just Firefox.
  • Additional privacy features and customization options.

If you're a Mozilla VPN subscriber, we recommend removing the Firefox VPN icon from the toolbar to avoid duplicate protection. On Windows, you can also install the Mozilla VPN extension to obtain even more value from your Subscription.

How can I get support or give feedback?

If you have any issues or questions about the Firefox VPN, please contact Mozilla Support.
