Thunderbird is configured to automatically check for updates to the application and any installed add-ons.

Note: If you run Linux (such as Ubuntu) and use your Linux distribution's packaged version of Thunderbird, you will need to wait for an updated package to be released to its package repository. See Installing Thunderbird on Linux This article only applies if you installed Thunderbird manually (without using your distribution's package manager).

Automatic updates

By default, Thunderbird is configured to automatically check for updates.

  1. If updates are available, the Software Update dialog will be displayed containing details about these updates. To update Thunderbird, click OK and the selected updates will be downloaded and installed.
  2. To finish the install process, you need to restart (close and re-open) Thunderbird by clicking Done.
  3. When Thunderbird restarts, the updates will have been installed.
