Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) is an official version of Firefox developed for large organizations like universities and businesses that need to set up and maintain Firefox on a large scale. Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features but it has the latest security and stability fixes.

If you are having issues using your screen reader with the new Firefox 57, you can download Firefox ESR as a workaround. However, switching from regular Firefox to Firefox ESR may result in data loss, particularly bookmarks. Follow these steps to minimize data loss by saving your information and syncing them across profiles.

Step One: On regular Firefox

  1. Open regular Firefox and save your information by setting up Firefox Sync. (You can also manually back up your data.)
  2. Create and launch a new profile on regular Firefox and mark it as the default in Profile Manager. (See Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles.)
  3. Sync that new profile with your existing profile so that your bookmarks and browsing information are on both profiles. (Skip this step if you chose to back up your data).

Step Two: On Firefox ESR

  1. Install Firefox ESR from the Firefox ESR download page.
  2. Launch Firefox ESR and choose the new profile if prompted.
  3. Get your bookmarks on Firefox ESR by logging into Sync. (If you've backed up your data and prefer to restore it, see restoring them from your backup).
