Firefox Home gives you instant access to your Firefox desktop history, open tabs and bookmarks on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Since it works with Firefox Sync on your desktop you have to install and set that up first. Once that's done, you'll just need to get Firefox Home from the iTunes store and connect it to your Firefox Sync account.
Table of Contents
Step 1: Install and set up a Firefox Sync account on your desktop
Of course, if you've already done this, just skip to Step 2.
- Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Firefox Sync page, and click .
- When you have finished installing Firefox Sync, click . Firefox will restart with the Add-ons window open.
- In the Add-ons window, click to open the Sync panel.
- Click .
- Click I've never used Sync before.
- Create a username and password. Enter your email address, and check "I agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy". Then click
Usernames and passwords can contain these characters: ||a-z|0-9|`|~|!|@|#|$|%|^|&|*|(|)|-|_|=|+|[ ]|{|}|\|;|:|'|"|,|.|<|>|/|?||
. - Create a secret phrase, then click
The secret phrase is what Firefox Sync uses to encrypt your data before it sends it to the server, keeping your data more secure. You can read more about it here.
. - Choose what information to sync. By default, Firefox Sync will sync everything. We strongly recommend that you use this setting for the best experience. For Advanced Users, if you really want to customize your settings, you can click on
and set it to to pick which items to sync, then click . - Enter text from the image, then click .
- You will see a Setup Complete! message. Click to close the setup window and take you back to the Sync panel.
- You do not need to do anything else. Firefox Sync will automatically sync your data in the background from here on. Note: The sync should happen very quickly but may take a few minutes or a few hours depending on how much data you need to sync and your network connection. Please leave Firefox open on your desktop to complete this sync process.
- Make sure the initial sync has completed before you use Firefox Home or Firefox Sync on another device. To see if the initial sync is complete, mouse over the Firefox Sync icon in the bottom right corner of the Firefox window. A tool tip should appear with a Last Update time. If there isn't a time listed or the time is a while ago, the Firefox Sync servers will not have your most recent data.
Step 2: Download Firefox Home and connect it to your Firefox Sync account
This part is easy.
- On your iPhone or iPod Touch, go to the App Store and download the free Firefox Home app.
- When you launch the app, you’ll be presented with a screen that lets you get an email with setup instructions or log in. Since you've already set up Firefox Sync in the steps above, go ahead and choose I Have A Sync Account.
- Enter your Firefox Sync username, password and Secret Phrase.
- Once you’ve logged in, Firefox Home will begin copying all of your information from your Firefox Sync account. This will take a few moments or longer the first time.
Now that I’ve set up Firefox Home, how do I use it?
Search, Tabs and Bookmarks are available by tapping the buttons at the bottom of the app window. When using search just type words related to the website you are trying to find. Firefox Home will search through the titles and urls of your open tabs, bookmarks and browsing history to find a match. See the How to use Firefox Home on your iOS device (iPhone and iPad) article for detailed instructions.
