Add-ons allow you to customize Firefox to your liking by either improving your browsing experience in an infinite number of ways or changing the appearance of your browser such as how you would change the background picture of your desktop. We'll show you the various ways you can get and install add-ons to Firefox.

Browse for add-ons

Browsing for add-ons is a great way to discover ones you never knew you needed.

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Add-ons.
    • Alternatively, you can also press and hold Ctrl + Shift + A on your keyboard.

  2. Make sure that you select the Get Add-ons panel if it is not already selected.
  3. Scroll all the way down; at the lower right of the screen, click on Browse all add-ons.
  4. When you find an add-on you wish to install, click on the Add to Firefox button that appears when you hover your cursor over the add-on.
  5. Wait for the Install(#) button timer to finish and then click on Install Now to proceed.
  6. After the add-on is installed, you may be prompted to restart Firefox, click the Restart Now button on the top left to begin restart Firefox and begin using the add-on.

Search for add-ons

If you have an idea of what add-on you want to install or know it by name you can search for it within Firefox.

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Add-ons.
  2. On the top-right corner of the browser, enter the search term for the add-on you would like to search for and press Enter on your keyboard or click on the Search symbol.
  3. Once you have found the add-on you want to use, simply click the Install button on the right side of the screen.
  4. After the add-on is installed, you may be prompted to restart Firefox; click Restart now to begin using the add-on.

Install an add-on from a file

If you have an add-on in the form of a file downloaded from the Internet, you can install it this way.

Note: Always make sure that the file you have downloaded is from a trusted source.
  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Add-ons.
  2. Click on the Tools for all add-ons button and select Install Add-on From File....

  3. Search for the add-on on your hard drive (it should have a .xpi extension,) click on it, and select Open.

  4. If you are sure this add-on is safe, wait for the Install(#) button timer to finish and then click on Install Now to proceed.

  5. After the installation is complete, it might prompt you to restart Firefox. Simply click Restart Now so you can begin using your new add-on.

Remove an add-on

To remove an add-on take the following steps:

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Add-ons.
  2. Select the type of add-on you wish to remove.
    • If the add-on is one that adds a function to the browser, click on the Extensions panel.
    • If it is a cosmetic add-on such as a theme, click on the Appearance panel.
