By default, when Thunderbird is launched it displays a predefined "start page" in the Message Pane:

You can customize the page that displays when Thunderbird starts up, or disable the start page altogether. To do this, select Thunderbird | PreferencesTools | OptionsEdit | Preferences.

In the General panel, modify the options in the Thunderbird Start Page section:

  • To prevent Thunderbird from displaying a start page, uncheck "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area".
  • To specify a custom start page, enter the URL in the Location field.
  • To revert to Thunderbird's default start page, click Restore Default.

To permanently enable or disable, go to View | Layout and check or uncheck "Message Pane."
