Firefox Sync is a service that lets you synchronize your bookmarks, history, passwords, add-ons and open tabs with another copy of Firefox – like one on another computer or on a mobile phone. This article briefly explains how it all works and why you'd want to use it.

What does it do?

Firefox Sync lets you take all your Firefox data (such as your bookmarks, history, passwords and open tabs) with you wherever you go. You just set up Firefox Sync on your home computer and your Firefox data will be securely stored on our servers and synchronized automatically from then on. Then, when you set up Firefox Sync on your work computer (or even your phone running Firefox), your Firefox data will be automatically synchronized with your home computer.

Why should I use it?

Firefox Sync makes it easy to surf the Web on your PC, get up and go and have everything (open tabs, saved passwords, browsing history and bookmarks) waiting for you on your phone just the way you left it. Ever tried typing in passwords or long URLs on your phone? Now you don't have to – Firefox Sync will fill them in for you! And what's more, the sync is two-way. So if you bookmark a great new site on your work computer, Firefox Sync will make sure that bookmark shows up on your computer at home.

Where's all my data?

Your data is safely stored on Mozilla's servers. Sync uses advanced security measures so your information can not be seen by others, even Mozilla. See Firefox Sync data is secure - Find out more for more.

How much of my data is synced?

Any of the following can be synchronized with the Mozilla server:

  • Bookmarks — including all tags, keywords, folders, and your custom menu order
  • Passwords
  • Preferences/Options of Firefox (but not of add-ons)
  • History of sites visited in the last 60 days
  • Tabs and tab groups
  • Bookmarks — including all tags, keywords, folders, and your custom menu order
  • Passwords
  • Preferences/Options of Firefox
  • History of sites visited in the last 60 days
  • Tabs and tab groups
  • Add-ons installed on your computer or mobile device

Each user is limited to a maximum of 25MB of data. 99.9% of current Sync users use less than 25MB, so you are unlikely to reach the limit. If you are near the limit, Firefox will provide a warning indicating that you won't be able to synchronize any new data until you delete older entries. If you do need more space, you can ask for it on the Mozilla Services Account web page.

You can choose how your data is synchronized when you create your Sync account and whenever you add a device. When you set up Firefox Sync, click the Sync Options button at the bottom-left corner of the setup window to select one of these options:

  • Merge this computer's data with my Sync data (default; recommended)
  • Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data
  • Replace all other devices with this computer's data
