If Thunderbird is saving a ton of drafts of the same email you can check the draft options in the account settings.

  1. Click on the email account this is happening in in the left toolbar from classic view
  2. Click on account settings
  3. Click on "Copies and Folders"
  4. The options for drafts will be here
  5. Go to the Composing category.
  6. Select the General tab.
  7. Make sure Auto save every __ minutes is checked.
  8. Enter the desired frequency for saving (three minutes is usually reasonable).
  9. Close the preferences window.

There may be an interval that drafts are saved in your web mail that may also be affecting this, or an add on.
