One of the findings of the all the recent UX work that has been going on is how important screenshots are for people. If fact they are so important that they found it's almost always better to show a screenshot from the wrong OS than to not show a screenshot at all.
This is a change for us but one I think is important to implement. I think the exceptions would be when showing a screenshot of a menu choice that doesn't exist in another OS (example from Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings).

We used to do that, when the content of the screenshot was basically the same. There was even a template to use as a "caption" showing that the screenshot was for a different OS. I found Template:linuxPic
{for win,mac} While this screenshot is for Linux, it will look similar on your operating system. {/for}
I remember there used to be one for Windows screenshots but I can't seem to find it.

Sorry, maybe I do not understand if this guideline is actively being followed or not.
Now, from what I can understand, this should mean that if we want, we could insert one image for all the three OS's or one for each.
# Select the {menu Advanced} panel, click the {menu General} tab, and then click {button Make Firefox the default browser}.{for win}<br><br> [[Image:Default - Win - Fx15]]{/for}
Isn't this against the original statement?

But in the last revision of [[How to make web links open in Firefox by default]] for example, there is this text block:
<nowiki># Select the {menu Advanced} panel, click the {menu General} tab, and then click {button Make Firefox the default browser}.{for win}<br><br> [[Image:Default - Win - Fx15]]{/for}</nowiki>

Hey Underpass,
You're right in this instance it would be good to show the windows screenshot to everyone. I approved the revision because there's nothing wrong with it. It would be better though if the image showed for everyone. I'll say for myself at least that old habits are hard to break and honestly I didn't catch this or I would have added it to the needs changes list. Thanks for the reminder.

On a pretty similar subject: when new updates come for articles, it is a drag to keep the links to localized screen shots intact. See more in the following thread:
Your help and attention would be appreciated. It sure is something to dev group to implement down the road.
Also, I would not mind some sound advice and comment from my fellow l10nners how they handle this.

It met with a resounding silence.

Again, I think that this guideline is currently not enforced enough. We still find en-us articles with image block "for Win" and no other images for the other systems.
