Do you have Adblock Plus installed? You might of accidentally blocked them by right clicking on one of the buttons and picking the "Adblock Plus: Block image" choice.

Hold down Ctrl+Shift+E to open the Adblock Plus Preferences window and see if you can find any entries under "My Ad Blocking Rules" that match your forums and delete them.

If you don't have that installed, then I'd like you to post a link to the forums so I can check out the forums and try to see if I can get the same thing to happen for me.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB) and do not click Preview after you have attached the image.

"Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove the Cookies" from sites that cause problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Tried everything you listed, still doesn't show the buttons. All the messages are there, and I can post to it. Problem is that at the bottom of every message there is supposed to be a "Quote" button, and for messages *I* wrote an "Edit" button.

There are NO buttons!

Tried using Opera, worked fine.

So, good riddance Firefox, hello Opera!
