firefox keeps starting up with tabs I removed and do not want - persistent
tried all suggestions - not pinned - closed properly by using exit from settings on RHS, etc FF used to work great for several years - then mozilla updates (something) and *ucks it all up And I do NOT want to work for Mozilla, testing their browser all the time

You can check that those pages aren't set as multiple homepages.
You can check the homepage setting in "Settings -> Home".
Firefox supports multiple homepages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
If you close Firefox with only pinned-tabs open, Firefox will open a normal tab on the next start.
You can check the startup setting.
- Settings -> General -> Startup: "When Firefox starts":
"Open previous windows and tabs"
"Show my homepage"
"Show a blank page"
