Firefox window shrinks vertically after screen save

Running Firefox (currently 151.0.2) on Windows 11. I normally have the Firefox window full height of the screen but not full width horizontally. If the PC goes into screen save, when I bring it out of screen save, the bottom of the Firefox window has moved up by what looks like a couple of dozen pixels. The top of the window has not moved, it's just that the vertical height of the window is less than before screen save cut in. If I let the PC go into screen save again, when it comes out of screen save the window has shrunk by a further vertical amount that looks about the same as the first time. And so on...

No other app that I run on the PC has the same problem with screen save, they all retain their size if screen save cuts in. It's easy enough to get the FF window back to full height by moving the mouse to the top of the window until the mouse pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, and then dragging the top of the title bar down slightly and then back to the top, but it's annoying to have to do this several times a day.

Any suggestions on a fix?

Hi njhp94,

This is a known type of issue that can happen with Firefox on Windows 11 after sleep/screen saver, where the window gets reprocessed by Windows as if the usable screen area changed (even though it didn’t). That can cause Firefox to “recalculate” its window height and shrink a bit each wake cycle.

A few common causes seen in similar reports are Windows display scaling changes after wake, multi-monitor or DPI reinitialization, or Firefox restoring window geometry incorrectly after a suspend/resume event. It also tends to affect Firefox more than other apps because of how it saves and restores window size internally.

Things that usually help:

  • Check Windows display scaling (Settings → Display → Scale) and keep it consistent (100%/125% etc.)
  • If you use multiple monitors, try disabling “remember window locations” temporarily to test
  • Turn off “smooth scrolling / hardware acceleration” in Firefox (just as a test)
  • Update both Firefox and GPU drivers, since some fixes are graphics-related
  • As a workaround, maximize once after wake (which forces Firefox to recalculate correctly)

There are also ongoing discussions about similar “window size changes after sleep” bugs in Firefox + Windows 11 combinations, so it’s likely not something you’re doing wrong, but a window management edge case between Firefox and the OS.

If you want, I can help you narrow it down to the exact trigger on your setup (multi-monitor, scaling, etc.).

Thanks for the response.

  1. I have dual monitors - they're 80cm 4k monitors with scaling set to 150% on both. I have turned off "remember window locations" to see if it makes a difference.
  2. The GPU driver is the latest stable version available for the nVidia video card that is driving the monitors, and Firefox is also the latest version.
  3. I'll wait to see if "remember window locations" makes a difference before trying disabling smooth scrolling.

Well, neither disabling remember window locations nor disabling smooth scrolling prevents the problem from happening.

Interestingly, if I set the Firefox window to full height, then double-click on the titlebar, instead of maximizing the window, which is what I would expect, that reduces the height of the Firefox window in the same manner as screen save does.
