Where is the beta home page where my most frequent web sites are displayed?

Hello. I recently downloaded the beta version and was rewarded with a new home page where my most frequently accessed web sites were displayed. How cool! Now it is gone and I can't determine how to restore it. Help please! Thank you!

Does either this, this or this support article provide the answer?

In short, try the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner. In addition, you can customize even more by installing the New Tab Override add-on.

I regret I cannot understand the suggestion (but appreciated!) about browser.newtabpage.activity-stream prefs.

I am struggling with the this, this or this suggestion. I am getting closer but I still have no tiles. I was able to get tabs (I think) of previously viewed pages. I will work on this more today.

Thanks.

First : this article will (hopefully) explain about this new 'New Tab Page' :

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/09/13/firefox-57-disable-highlights-on-the-new-tab-page/

Then : the 'prefs' that cor-el is talking about - toggling these prefs just might get you that New Tabe Page back :

Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar :

browser.newtabpage and look for the preferences :

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled and : browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled

and set both values to true

Close and restart Firefox.

(I don't have the 'aboutHome' preference yet, so I can't check that myself)

Are the terms tab and tile used interchangeably? It seems tiles are smaller than tabs. I was hoping to enable tiles as shown on the About the New Tab page. I am still trying on this and I appreciate the suggestions.

You see 'tiles' (aka : 'thumbnails') on the New Tab page. When you click on one of these tiles/thumbnails, it will open a tab.

Computer jargon ...... can be pretty confusing, eh  ?

As you noticed, the new tab page content changed design between Firefox 56 and Firefox 57. The new design is called the Activity Stream. You still have "tiles" for your sites, but yes, they are a lot of smaller and now there are other categories of content as well.

If you want to switch from Activity Stream to the old design:

You can disable Activity Stream by changing this preference from true to false:

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled

Happy112 listed the steps for using the about:config preferences editor in this reply:

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1182538#answer-1023666

If it's your first time in there, I can break it down a little more:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return.

Click the button accepting the risk. I know it sounds a bit dangerous, but as long as you know the consequences of what you're changing, it's hard to do any serious damage.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

A "Boolean" preference can only be true or false, so double-clicking toggles back and forth between the two options.

(4) Then open a new tab or use reload (Ctrl+r) in a new tab to test the change.

Hopefully that clarifies?
