Microsoft Authenticator 2FA

I DO NOT OWN A SMART PHONE.X IS ASKING ME TO PROVE I'm human by scanning a QR code with a smart phone in order to log in to my account. It was told to me that this will allow me to scan that code. I am leery about using it as Mozilla does not monitor it. It gets mostly good reviews but people complain about stability. I will just use it once to get into my account. Should I proceed> Thanks very much.

I don't know how to help with the rest of the question, but it's important to note:

If you ever enroll to a 2FA provider, you won't be able to "just use it once" and delete it, you will have to keep it to get into your account from there on — losing access to the 2FA could mean losing access to your account if you don't manage the potential recovery keys and similar provided to you during that process — so whatever you set up, don't just blindly delete it afterwards, as it might mean getting locked out of that account forever.

Oh boy - so when you say my account -- which would that be? My msn account? - FF account ? - the X account I'm trying to fix? -- if it is just that X account, I think I'll be ok - but I don't want to lose access to all my other accounts. Thank you so much for your time and thoughts.

I will probably NOT install it as I think there is a bit of over my head stuff. Recovery key management i.e. -- thanks so so much

Yes, the X account you'd be planning to secure it with. Once you add any similar external authenticator, you'll need to use it along with every login going forwards to calculate the numbers for you to enter.

As for the human check and QR codes for X, I'm not even sure that's coming from them, maybe it's just a provider they use, and you might be able to click around for a bit for some other mode of verification? (There are accessibility rules in many jurisdictions, that define alternatives like a phone call etc. to provide multiple methods; maybe if you look around the fine print there long enough, there will be other options that would work without a smartphone?)

Ok. Get sentence one. Not so much two. I will only use it for X so should be ok I guess. IDK...might just borrow a friend's phone to do the scan and get in.

I have looked at the details for verification but see no other options. Part of the problem is my user name. They are not accepting it so it may be incorrect. Signed up years ago ...user name "paperwork" gone. If I could just get in, I could retrieve my user name to avoid such messes as this going forward. Thanks again for your thoughts.

The verification tool they are using is "cloudflare" --
