Why does my Firefox freeze then crash?

So for three days now, my firefox constantly crashes. I would be reading a story online or watching a video on Youtube and then it will suddenly freeze. In videos, it'll still play the sound but the screen will freeze. I can't pause or stop it. Then either Firefox crashes and closes or I have to close it for it to stop. Sometimes, when I try opening it again, it still won't open. I used to have 50 tabs open and never ad this issue. After this, I closed all the open tabs, even deactivated a bunch of extensions, run malware detection, and still the issue continues. I don't know what the problem is. I even followed instructions and deactivated hardware acceleration options in Performance. And I have all AI options turned off too. The app also recently was updated.

Thank you for the help. It turned out to be Momentum! I'd been using it for years and never thought it could be the source of such a problem but multiple other users seem to see similar issues with it and I have since disabled it and the issue is completely gone! Firefox has never worked so well for me, in fact! I guess it was causing small issues this whole time and I just didn't know to look for it there.

This crash report is couple months old, if you get a few more recent ones please post them here for comparison as well, thanks.

The GPU crash is very similar to other folks running "Windhawk" app (previous crashes: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/2007362 …) — aren't you running some Windows UI customizations as well?

Few months old?! That can't be right, it should be from today. That said, it wasn't sending the reports so far.

I don't know. What is a Windows UI?

Tweaks, modifications, "mods", things like mentioned in e.g. this article: https://techpp.com/2025/11/17/best-windhawk-mods-windows/ — something running all the time and touching everything "to improve" something. It can be to customize the Windows appearance, or add some missing functionality.

The crash id submitted above was uploaded today, however is for v147.0.2 from January that crashed early February. If you have a few more IDs that have already uploaded from about:crashes, you can share them here too. The main reason is to see if the crashes are the same, or have different reasons.

I guess I submitted the last one thinking it was the recent crash report but wasn't . I don't have anything like that on. The only thing running all the time is the antivirus and that has been there forever. But I'm running firefox in troubleshoot mode right now and doing exactly what I was doing before the crash but everything is working fine. I guess it must be one of my extensions? I have a ton on!

Well sometimes the misbehaving content appears alright even after leaving the troubleshooting mode, for no apparent reason… 🤷

But it might be either the addons, or some of the optimizations that are suppressed in the safe mode load.

Basically the next steps from Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox are in the The problem does not happen in Troubleshoot Mode section. And that's mostly to follow if anything from Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems makes a difference for you. (But it sounds you changed those performance prefs already, so there should not be much new to try there though.)
