Just recently I changed my privacy settings to take advantage of the privacy opt-out option for websites not to share my data or information. I went to my AMX credit card account and now every time I move to a new page the message, "Your Global Privacy Control opt-out signal has been honored" pops up and gets in the way of the information on the page. I am constantly having to click on the X in the corner to close the message box. Once would be enough for each main website. Having it pop up every time is absolutely annoying. I like having this option but if it's going to make me have to close the informational box every time I move to a new page or back to a former page, then I will have to undo the choice. The web designer who put this message text into the Firefox browser needs to find a way to only have it pop up once if they feel it is really necessary to tell me that they are blocking information from other companies. I really don't even need the first message just as long as it works behind the scenes. I hope someone gets web support to look into this issue. It's just so annoying.

Also a small note regarding GPC, the issue doesn't show up in Chrome/Edge because they don't support GPC at all (despite it being one of the only legally applicable mechanisms).

Hi Leo,

Could you please attach a screenshot of the message? From what I can see, it doesn't seem to come from Firefox...

Hi Denys,

Here is a screen shot of the message I'm getting on every page when I go to American Express. I first checked with AMX and they told me that they don't issue any message such at the Opt-Out message I'm getting on every page. They told me to contact Mozilla because they think it's coming from my browser.

The message is in the screen shot that I took of the message which is located towards the bottom of the image. That's where it appears every time I move to a different page within AMX. Strangely enough it is only happening on AMX and not on other credit card online accounts. That's why I checked with AMX first but they absolutely maintain they do not have an Opt Out message like I'm getting. I hope you can shed some light on it.

Thanks, Leo Schick

Thank you for the screenshot!

I'm 99.99% sure that's not a Firefox message. To make it 100%, you can open Web Developer Tools (Ctrl+Shift+I), click the leftmost node picker icon and then click the message you see. If it's a part of Firefox/system UI, nothing will happen, but if it's a part of the web page, it will get highlighted when you hover it, and the corresponding HTML code will get selected after clicking.

The above check should give you a precise answer, but I bet the website support just has no idea of what's happening on their site.

Hi Denys, I used the Web Developer Tool and the message did highlight when I moved my mouse over it. So I got back with American Express and the agent and I went through all their settings and there is no Global Privacy Control opt-out switch. While I had the agent on the phone, I shut off every ad blocker and security add-on like Malware Bytes and I was still getting the message. So I decided to try DuckDuckGo and got the same problem with the opt out message appearing, but when I went to Chrome and MS Edge, the message did not appear. So I went back into Firefox in Trouble Shoot mode so that all add-ons were non-functional and I still got the Opt out message. So what does that suggest to you? Two other browsers did not have the problem but basic Firefox and DuckDuckGo did have the problem. All I know it's driving me crazy trying to find out where this message is coming from. The strange thing is that when I go to the AMX website, the message pops up even before I login to their website. Any other ideas what could be causing it. It has only started within the last month. So it's a relatively new problem.

One other issue I am having is my home page is AOL.COM If you're familiar with it, they have a news banner that runs across the top of the page with photos and a brief text comment about the article. Just lately the photos show but text comments do not show, but if I use my F5 key to refresh the page on the 4th refresh the comments will appear and stay until I close the browser. I don't know what is causing it and why using the F5 key exactly four times will show the text comments.

Hi Denys,

Well, with the help of ChatGPT I solved the first problem with the Global Privacy Control opt-out message. Here is what ChatGPT suggested:

2. Check Hidden Firefox Preference Type this in the address bar: about:config Accept the warning. Then search for: privacy.globalprivacycontrol.enabled If it is set to: true → double-click it to change to false

Also check: privacy.globalprivacycontrol.functionality.enabled Set that to false too if present.

Then completely close and reopen Firefox.

I went to DuckDuckGo because it will sometimes copy settings from Firefox and in the settings I found the option for the Global Privacy setting and I turned it off.

So my Global Privacy message no longer appears on my AMX website. I'm just surprised that AMX is the only one that sends out the message when that option is active.

Now, if I can find the answer to the other new problem I'm having with the AOL.COM website not showing news article text unless I hit the F5 key 4 times, that would be great as that is the last problem I'm having.

Thanks Denys for your help so far. I noticed that you are in Ukraine. I have Ukrainian ancestry from my father's side of the family.

Regards, Leo

Hi,

I thought you wouldn't want to turn off GPC, but if you would, you can do that from within the Firefox Settings: just uncheck "Tell websites not to sell or share my data" in Privacy & Security (this will also show up if you search for "GPC"). You can learn more about how this setting works here. Ideally, you'd probably want to revert the about:config pref changes and use this setting instead.

Regarding the AOL issue you described, does it look like bug 2030614? If so, it's being worked on.

And I'm glad to hear we have the same origin of some kind xD

Also a small note regarding GPC, the issue doesn't show up in Chrome/Edge because they don't support GPC at all (despite it being one of the only legally applicable mechanisms).

I've also filed bug 2037704 for the team to take a look (though I'm not sure we'd want to take an action here).

PS A final (hopefully!) note, I've approved one of your replies above, but you submitted another, similar one, shortly afterwards. Please let me know which one you want to keep, and I'll delete the second one.

H Denys, You can delete the duplicate second one. I'm not sure how I managed to submit it a second time, but thank you for noticing that I slipped up with that.

Yes, the problem that they are working on about the AOL.COM home page is exactly the problems I'm having. I watched the video that a user submitted and that's exactly what happens to me. Reading through I didn't notice that anyone happened to realize that pressing the F5 key exactly 4 times will solve the problem. That's a very strange solution but I'm wondering it it would help the support team to know that little work around. Maybe it might point them in the right direction to look at some coding with that in mind.

In any case, I'll keep the GPC option off for now as it was just too annoying to see that message box pop up on every page of the AMX website.

Thank you so much for you help solving my issues.
