Why can't I install Firefox on a Windows tablet?

Hello, everyone,

I don't seem able to install Firefox on a Windows tablet (at least I think it's a tablet, it's an Asus Transformer Book, with a tablet screen and a detachable keyboard, anyway). Does anyone have any ideas why, please?

I should warn anyone before they read on that I am in no way techie, so helping me may be frustrating at times as I need advice/instructions etc spelled out really simply, as anything too technical is beyond me, I'm afraid.

So, anyone brave and/or patient enough to read on... I've bought the tablet secondhand, 'wiped' etc. It's an Asus T100HAN Processor: Intel(R) Atom(TM) x5-Z8500 CPU@ 1.44GHz 1.44GHz Installed memory: 2.00GB System type: 64-bit Operating System, 64-based processor Pen and touch: Full Windows Touch Support with 10 Touch Points

It's currently running Windows 10 Home, but I'm hoping to install Linux Mint on it, although it's only since I bought it that it's occurred to me that putting Linux on it might not be as straightforward as I thought, (ie I'm typing this on a laptop that came with Windows but on which I installed Linux Mint. "If Linux runs on this, it must run on anything that can handle Windows," I thought to myself before buying the tablet. But now I've realised that, eg, this laptop doesn't have a touchscreen, not does the screen have to rotate, which is the main reason for buying the tablet.)

That's sort of a digression, but might not be, as it explains why my priority right now is installing Firefox on the machine - so that even if it turns out I can't install Linux on it, at least I'll have Firefox rather than Edge or whatever.

So, in the Edge that came already on the machine, I accessed the official Mozilla page (despite getting several scary warnings from Edge about there being a problem with "this website's" security certificate, oh, and something about "Windows SmartScreen can't be reached at the moment") and downloaded Firefox. I went for the desktop version because that seemed more relevant than the Android or iOS versions. Then I've told it to "Run". The installer thing has come up and the little colour wave thing has happened with the icon in the taskbar (or whatever it's called). And then, after several minutes, I've got a message from Firefox Installer: "Hmm. For some reason, we could not install Firefox. Choose OK to start again." So I've clicked on OK, and the same thing has happened. Several times. And I've downloaded Firefox umpteen times as well, just in case there'd been an issue with that first download, only the same thing has happened, over and over again.

From the "about" thing, it looks like the 30GB or so of storage on the tablet, but about 10GB(!!!) is taken up by "system files to help Windows run properly. Your PC won't work without them."

Can anyone explain, please, what's going on, and what (if anything) I can do to get the wretched thing to allow me to install Firefox? I could just about cope if I can't get Linux, but no Firefox??? No, no no!

Thanks, Alice.

If this system has Windows 8.1 then the most current you can run is Firefox 115 ESR currently at 115.22.0esr as will be updated til 115.27.0esr in August unless Mozilla extends updates again.

If the system has Windows 10, make sure it is not in Windows S mode. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/windows-s-mode-wont-let-me-install-firefox

Try the full offline setup from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/desktop-release/ as downloading Firefox elsewhere on mozilla.org may serve you the small online stub installer.

Hello James,

Thanks for your reply, which solved my problem, although in a roundabout way...

On the tablet, I followed the s-mode link, and then, from the page it led to, the link to the microsoft support information about getting out of s-mode. On the microsoft support page there's a link to the Microsoft Store, via which, apparently, you can switch out of s-mode.

However, when I clicked on that link, to the Microsoft Store, I got a message that "The Server has Stumbled" and there being a number of reasons why that might have happened (the cutesy language, by the way, is one of the reasons I'm desperate to ditch Microsoft again). I refreshed the page, as suggested, and got the same thing again. And again when I clicked on Microsoft Store on the tablet.

I left things until the following day, to see if the 'server' had resolved itself, but I got the same thing again, several times. So I looked up the error code, and found something on some microsoft support page about it possibly being something to do with the tablet's side of the server and it may be worth trying to reset the computer, to see if that realigned the settings or whatever, so I would be able to access Microsoft Store. So I reset the tablet, a small reset rather than a full one, but even then it took ages, even though it was supposedly wiped by the previous owner and I've done rock all with it in the couple of days I've had it.

Anyway this morning I tried to access the Store again, firstly through the above Microsoft support link and then through the icon on the tablet, but each time I got the wretched stumbling server message. But I thought I might as well try skipping the Store and s-mode thing and trying to install Firefox again. And, hey presto! No issues at all accessing Mozilla, nor downloading Firefox, nor in running it - nor in using it to access t'internet.

I have no idea why that might be, but, frankly, I don't really care - I have access to Firefox and that's enough for me. So thank you ever so much for making it possible for me to access my fab Firefox again! Alice
