Hi. Can you please explain your issue in great detail? Thanks.

Hi - I logged into mysocialsecurity.gov and clicked the tab for message center. I had 2 old messages, so I checked the boxes and tried to delete. The delete link did nothing. I tried several times. I was told by the website it's the browser.

The delete buttons pulled up a pop-up with delete link and a question about whether I really wanted to delete the messages. The delete link did not work. The cancel link did.

Obviously, given that the website had sensitive data on it and we need account login details to access it, it's going to be very difficult for us to troubleshoot this issue. Unfortunately, I've found that government-run websites are often the worst for cross-browser compatibility, with some of them only running properly on Internet Explorer.

This is not so much a Firefox issue, as it is an issue with the way that the website was designed. This website is likely using code that is not fully compatible with Firefox. For this, there is little that we can do here.

If clearing your Firefox cache doesn't fix the issue, I recommend reporting the issue to the Web Compatibility team. They specialize in diagnosing and reporting issues to the website developer to be fixed.

I tried the https://webcompat,com link, and filled out the form. Both report link buttons did nothing. I just closed it.

Given that you are having issues that website as well, perhaps there is a setting or something installed in your browser that is causing this issue?

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

To simplify the instructions, just do the following:

  1. Press the menu button (looks like three horizontal lines)
  2. Select Help
  3. Select Restart with Addons Disabled...
  4. When the popup appears, select Start in Safe Mode, not Refresh Firefox
  5. Test to see if you are still having issues with the website that you originally mentioned

Hope these instructions are a bit easier to follow.
