Not sure what I did wrong, but first attempt at this did not post. I was logged in at the time.

The links that do not open properly (JPGs and videos (YouTube, etc.) occur on some sites only; others work as before.

The JPGs on "broken" sites appear as a full-size gray box, a border around a white box, or a small icon. Right clicking on either and selecting open in a new tab, has them appear properly. Also just found same behavior with PNG file links.

Videos show as blank white space. Right clicking on that space does not offer a new tab (share this page, save page as, etc.)

I am on an HP laptop running Windows 7 Pro; my wife on a Dell laptop, also Windows 7, does not have the problem. I have many more add-ons than she does.

Thanks

Thanks Bryan, I opened an old profile and both linked JPGs and YouTube videos opened properly. Whatever happened during (or around the same time as) the upgrade affected the current profile. Next question: Is opening a new profile the best way to fix the problem, or is there something else I should try first? Thanks

You may want to trying dumping your cache and if unsuccessful next would be to clear out cookies.

Have you added or removed any plugins since it last worked correctly?

Your System Details shows;

Installed Plug-ins

Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0 Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0
Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

Flash Player Version 18.0.0.232
https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
Note: Windows users must download the “Internet Explorer” and “Plugin-based browsers” installers.

check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

https://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Thanks, Fred.

Interesting that Microsoft's Programs and Features (add/remove programs) showed only Flash 18 installed. But I did follow your removal instructions, then added Flash 18.0.0.232 back in. This did not solve either problem (JPGs or videos).

Anything else I could try?

Would opening a new profile help? If so, is there an easy way to list what add-ons I have and add them back into the new profile one at a time until it breaks again?

How about carrying over bookmarks, etc?

Thanks

@togfnh, Have you tried to run Firefox under a different profile (FF profile, not Windows)? If you haven't yet, try the method at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows.

This can eliminate (or prove), your profile as a culprit

There are many potential differences between your old a new profiles, including as suggested above cached files and cookies. Whenever one or two sites are not working, those are the first thing to try clearing.

However, if this affects numerous unrelated sites, a setting or extension might be a more likely source of the issue.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs.

Problem solved. Thanks to all!

The culprit was the Add-on Extension "Privacy Badger 1.0.1" which I found by disabling all extensions with the "...could not be verified for use in Firefox." warning banner, then adding them back in one at a time.

I double checked by opening a site I knew was blocked, enabled Privacy Badger, reloaded the page, disabled PB, and reloaded again. Suspicion confirmed.

That warning banner was very helpful in limiting the list.

Thanks again.
