Bookmark feature is not working properly now
Ever since I did a FF refresh (what a mistake that was!) my computer is pretty foreign to me now. But, what I think is rather bothersome is when I try and add a bookmark from the bookmark icon at the top of the page, it does not work properly any longer now. Specifically, I used to be able to add a you tube music video to a specific location labeled new folder, instead of my usual bookmark menu folder that I use to normally add a bookmark. When I try and add a you tube video to my new folder bookmark, it will not appear in that location any longer. What in is going on now? If I would have thought doing a refresh was going to screw up my computer to the extent it has, I would have NEVER done so. FF presents the refresh operation as a good thing to solve FF problems. But it actually creates more problems than it solves. Can someone explain why I can no longer add a new bookmark to my new folder location, like I used to be able to do? Please help. Thank you.

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.
Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Then follow the directions.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).
Is the problem still there?
Hi FredMcD, Starting in safe mode does not solve the problem. I still can't create a new you tube bookmark like I used to be able to. I can though create a new bookmark if I go through several steps first. If go to the bookmark tab and click on it, and then click on other bookmarks and then move the cursor over to the right and click on new folder and then move the title from the that location down to new folder, the bookmark WILL now appear in my new folder bookmarks. Obviously, a whole lot of extra work to accomplish when what I was doing before hand by just having to click on the bookmark icon to make a new bookmark entry.
I do notice that when I do click on the bookmark icon now, and try to create a new bookmark, it shows edit bookmark? But in order for that to happen, the bookmark icon is all blue. When the bookmark icons star has an outline of a star instead of being all blue, it then shows bookmark created or something like that. Maybe when I'm trying to create a new you tube bookmark from my new folder bookmark file, it may be showing edit bookmark instead of creating a new bookmark? Nonetheless, I didn't have this problem before hand. Again, I just had to click on the bookmark icon, and a new you tube video bookmark was created. How can I do what I used to be able to do? I believe the refresh messed up that function also. Can you help? Thank you.
When you started Firefox in Safe Mode, and the problem continued, that showed that the problem may be outside of the browser.
Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?
FredMcD, thank you for your reply. I don't have the problem with I.E., so the problem is FF exclusively. Again, as I mentioned in my last reply, I can create a new folder bookmark, but only after going through many obstacles to create it. I used to be able to just simply click on the bookmark star while viewing a you tab music video, and then using the drop down menu select new folder from the options, and click on it, and whala, I had a new new folder bookmark, just that simple. Now when I try that, I don't see tha new new folder bookmark in my new folder bookmark list. I have to go through all the procedures I mentioned to achieve that. How can I just be able to create a new new folder bookmark the way I used to be able to?
It's possible, it may have something to do with what is referred to as the "other bookmarks" link. I don't understand why when I select new folder from the drop down menu within the bookmarks box, it will not work any longer? There has to be something going on now, that was not going on before I did a FF refresh regarding my creating a a new "new folder" bookmark, and I suspect (bear in mind I'm not a computer wizard) it has something to do with possibly "other bookmarks" being some kind of default? Knowing what is happening FredMcD, what suggestions might you have? Thank you for your help.
Have you tried the Computer in safe mode with networking?
Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Hi Fred,
So as I don't get myself into more trouble, as I did when I tried refreshing FF so as to possibly resolve a issue I was having. After reading all the instructions in the first link you sent, just what am I trying to do here? Am I JUST trying to create a new profile, or am I trying to remove an old profile AND then create a new profile? Being I'm not a computer expert, I prefer to keep it simple, if possible. Frankly, the first link, seemed to have too many options. So we are clear, I DON'T have a problem creating a new bookmark when I am trying to bookmark a web site and I use the BOOKMARK MENU option in the folder link within the bookmark box. It is when I try and use the NEW FOLDER option within the folder option box that the problem occurs. The bookmark, even though it says it was created, does NOT show up in my new folder list, like it used to do before hand. I now have to go through all the procedures that I listed previously, Fred. Hopefully, you can be patient with me here Fred, so we can resolve the problem. Just want my bookmark functions to perform the way they used to, and I reasonably sure that can happen. Just hoping I don't have to jump through a whole lot of hoops to get there? Thank you Fred.
We are here to help.
FredMcD,
Thank you. To keep it simple, which of the 3 links you provided, do you suggest, that may be best to solve my problem that I have explained in detail? I would prefer to not try all 3 links if possible. Evidently, you think creating a new profile will solve this problem. But, will it screw up my existing bookmarks, either the bookmark menu bookmarks I have, or the new folder bookmarks? Just want to make sure I'm not going down a slippery slope here. Thank you FredMcD.
Please do not place a space at the beginning of your sentences. That makes it hard to read your posts.
Check out each link I posted to learn about the profiles. Then create a new one. Use it As Is to test for the problem.
Does it work if you drag the tab to a bookmarks folder?
You can do that with the bookmarks sidebar or hover the combined star and "Show your bookmarks" button to open the drop-down list.
Note that if you click the star the bookmark gets stored in the "Other Bookmarks" folder and that you can click the highlighted star another time to edit the bookmark.
Hi cor-el, thank you for your reply. Yes, I'm aware that when I click on the bookmark star it shows "other bookmarks" and if it shows a solid blue star, I can edit that bookmark. If I create a bookmark and I assign it to "bookmark menu" it will appear in my bookmark menu list. But if I assign it new folder, it will not appear in my new folder bookmark list, like it used to do before the refresh issue. Yes, I can drag that newly created bookmark from other bookmarks to new folder bookmarks once I click on the bookmark tab in the menu tab area, and proceed to other bookmarks then drag it down to new folder bookmarks. And then finally, that new new folder bookmark will appear in my new folder bookmark list. Before hand I just had to click on the new folder option within the bookmark drop down options, and click on it, and wala that new folder bookmark would appear in my new folder bookmark list. I wouldn't have to go through all the other steps I currently do. I was hoping there would be a quick simple way of solving the problem, cor-el. If you have any suggestions, please advise. Thank you.
cor-el, looking at your last post, I forgot to ask about "You can do that with the bookmarks sidebar or hover the combined star and "Show your bookmarks" button to open the drop-down list. What is the bookmarks sidebar? I also don't see a link stating "show your bookmarks" either. When I click on the bookmarks tab in the menu bar and click on show all bookmarks, when that window opens, it says library. Within that window on the left, it shows the various bookmark links. When I click on bookmark menu, in the window/area to the right, it shows ALL my bookmarks within the bookmark menu file/folder that I have in the area on the right . But, when I click on new folder bookmarks, nothing appears, it is empty. When I click on other bookmarks, it says new folder in the area to the right. Why does other bookmarks show new folder bookmarks cor-el? I think that fact is saying something. It appears to be saying when I access "other bookmarks", it shows the empty new folder bookmarks? Also, why does my new folder bookmarks show nothing in it, when in fact I have 175 bookmarks in new folder bookmarks? It seems I may have a couple of new folder bookmarks floating around? Is that possible? Certainly, I have about 175 bookmarks in at least one of them. Also, I notice as I mentioned, I can add a you tube music video (which is a new folder bookmark) and that is what is segregated in my new folder bookmarks, to my bookmark menu list bookmarks and it WILL appear in that specific list. But, when I try and put that you tube bookmark in my new folder bookmark list, it will NOT appear in it. Clearly, something is happening that is out of whack there. I think after stumbling around about an hour in the bookmarks territory, I might have stumbled on something that might explain my problem? Let me explain. When I try and create a new bookmark by clicking on the bookmark star, and when the bookmark box appears, the location or option appearing says other bookmarks. It appears that is the default bookmark setting in the folder option. When I create a new bookmark it is going to other bookmarks initially. But when I access other bookmarks from the bookmark tab within the bookmark menu bar, it will show in a small pane to the right, new folder, and within that small pane it will show that new folder/you tube bookmark I just created. I then have to drag it down to my new folder location, again in my bookmark menu location within the bookmark menu bar tab. I'm thinking, if I were to delete the new folder option (again that appears in a small pane to the right) and I have the option to delete new folder appearing after opening the other bookmarks link, that might solve my problem? If when I click on other bookmarks, there is no option of new folder appearing, maybe my new folder bookmark option will work the way it used to. Without having to go through the extra steps I do now? But, I'm sort of worried if I delete THAT specific new folder bookmark that appears in conjunction with other bookmarks, it may delete all my current new folder bookmarks, of which I have 175 of them. And, I certainly don't want that to happen. Do you think me trying that experiment will in fact delete all 175 of my current new folder bookmarks, cor-el? Or, will it just delete the new folder option appearing to the right after I click on the other bookmarks link? Whats your opinion, cor-el? Yes, I know this is lengthy, but I what to solve this problem, and I'm quite sure it is solvable. Maybe just something that simple? Thank you, cor-el.
You can find the "View Bookmarks Sidebar" item if you click the list icon next to the star on the Navigation Toolbar. This will open the sidebar at the left side of the browsing window with the bookmarks showing. The shortcut key for opening the bookmarks in the sidebar is Ctrl+B. You can also open the history in the sidebar via Ctrl+H or via the History item in the "3-bar" menu button.
cor-el, thank you for your reply. I now understand how I can access "View Bookmarks Sidebar". Do you have a opinion about my possible solution to my problem? That is right click and then deleting the new folder link within the small pane just to the right of "other bookmarks" when I click on "other bookmarks", from the bookmark menu list, from the menu bar bookmarks tab at the top of the FF screen? I am inclined to think it may solve my problem, as simple as it may sound, to get back to creating a new "new folder" bookmark, the way I used to. I just don't know if that tab to the right of "other bookmarks" ever did show "new folder" before hand. Thank you.
Hi cor-el, I tried using the "view bookmark sidebar" option. I can create a new bookmark in the "new folder" bookmarks option, and then when I view it in the bookmarks sidebar (which shows ALL my bookmarks) it will appear at the bottom of that list. If I then drag it up to the location where it shows my new folder bookmarks and insert it in the location I want within the new folder bookmarks, it then will show in my new folder bookmarks when I access my new folder bookmarks list only from the bookmarks tab at the top of the screen. So, success at last. Yes, it is one more step then previously I had to do, but it is better than the other method I had to do. Thank you for your help and patience cor-el, it was appreciated.
