Thunderbird requires password each time email is sent

I find now that Thunderbird requires Earthlink's password each time an email is sent. Earlier it required it once a day. I am on Windows 11 using Earthlink.net for provider.

Is this only during sending, or on receiving, too?

Confirm that your SMTP settings are correct, according to their recommended settings page ( https://help.earthlink.net/portal/en/kb/articles/email-server-setting ):

Outgoing Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net Outgoing Port Number: 587 Outgoing Security Setting: STARTTLS Authentication is Required: Use your full email address and password.

(I notice that Thunderbird might suggest for Authentication, "Encrypted Password." I think that may be a mistake, because you're already using encrypted STARTTLS. Start off with "Normal Password" and if that doesn't work, try "Encrypted Password.")

If they are correct, try this:

- Make sure cookies are allowed (<Settings | Privacy & Security | Web Content | Accept cookies from sites>);

- Delete all cookies for that account (<Settings | Privacy & Security | Web Content | Show Cookies>);

- Delete all passwords for that account from saved passwords (<Settings | Privacy & Security | Passwords | Saved Passwords>);

Next time you fetch or send email, you should be asked for your credentials, you'll be asked if you want to save them (Yes, of course) and they should be saved for subsequent sessions.

I have to say that their on-line help pages are poor. Vague, incomplete information and many broken links.

Thank you very much Lin. This affected both sending and receiving. Settings and authentication were all correct. Deleting cookies seemed to be the thing that cured the problem. There were no passwords saved. I have never been asked for credentials or asked if I wanted them saved. However, Thunderbird now works well as it did before this episode of requiring passwords started some weeks ago.
