I've recently clean installed Windows 8.1.

Ever since I have done so websites are not displaying properly, especially Facebook. I have screen shots of the messed up views but can't seem to add to this document.

hello, probably that's an issue with hardware acceleration - please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general.

The thing is, Philipp, when I was running Windows 7 just two days ago, I didn't have this problem. Drivers are all up to date for graphics cards (Hybrid graphics has been both enabled and disabled and no difference).

the newest driver versions are usually available at the manufacturers (intel, nvidia, amd) homepage - otherwise try disabling HWA as described above (which will take a restart of the browser to take effect)...

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but to use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with text not being displayed properly.

So far it appears Philipp's idea is successful. Turning off the hardware acceleration has worked. Thanks.

After years of problems with Flash I bought a new machine only to be greeted with a browser which does not function properly. Why does this not surprise me. I tried turning off 'hardware acceleration' but this is not to be found following the above instructions. So it is hidden somewhere else. I am now using multiple browsers and am close to permanently pulling the Mozilla plug after 20 years. Tells a story. If you want to see how a proper browser works then try Chrome.
