I suddenly have been getting a demand for my Primary Password after 20 years of no passwords - I used the one password I had and it wasn't accepted.

Patricia Rosemoor

I have two Tbird accounts pmcreativeservices@rcn.com has been mine for 20 years, and it's what I use for bills, banking, etc. The other account is PatriciaRosemoor@rcn.com and is only used to collect messages that come from my author website. Yesterday, I got a message from someone who tried but couldn't put a book up at Amazon and asked if there was something I could do about it. My trying to send her a message via the PatriciaRosemoor account is what started requests for my Primary Password. One a minute after I cancelled the last one. I tried the two passwords I knew I had, but neither worked. I got a request for a new password so I did that and it didn't work either. I kept going back to it all day yesterday uselessly. I found directions of what to do online, but it didn't match up with my Settings information. Please, if you can tell me how to fix this, I would be grateful. Or, if I can keep the thousands of emails I probably have, I could try deleting the account and recreating the account. The problem would be how to bring all my saved emails back. Thank you for your help. Patricia

Please verify that it is the Primary Password being requested, and not an account password. If it is a Primary password that you have forgotten, you can remove it, but will then have to reenter your account passwords. More info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/protect-your-thunderbird-passwords-primary-password If I am confusing you, let me know.

I checked my desktop. I was correct inthat I never chose a Primary Password. And I was correct about the password I was trying to use. This laptop would not let me see anything about Passwords, but as I said, I didn't think I ever chose one here, either. I remember a couple of updates but never the demand to go add a Primary Password, so I never did. What can I do now? I don't want a Primary if I can still work without one. Is there some way to redo my site without losing my couple thousand emails?

I checked my desktop. I was correct. Never made a Primary Password. So how is my laptop demanding one that doesn't exist. Can I delete this version and then make a new version without losing my thousands of saved emails? Patricia

If you know your email password, you can remove the primary password with these steps:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/protect-your-thunderbird-passwords-primary-password

Go to tools>Developer tools>error console - enter this text, including the closing ')'

   openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml")

- the Reset button should appear. All passwords for accounts will be deleted

AND, if all else fails, I will assist in salvaging all the emails you now have. Let me know.

I got in and reset. Now I can't bring up my passwords. It asks for my PIN. I didn't have one specifically with pmcreativeservices@rcn.com, but then it brought up Patricia.Rosemoor@gmail.com and I used my PIN for that and it says it isn't correct. Now it says use a different account with the name and password. I have tried that and it tells me it isn't correct. Any ideas of what I can do now?

Now my PIN worked and I got into passwords. They are erased. Now I need to know how to add the new ones -- where do I find it and what is the wording since it's now all gone. Thank you for all your help. I just need this one last thing (I hope). Patricia

Perhaps read the article linked to from that which David supplied.

Password Manager - Remember, delete and change passwords in Thunderbird

I was able to add a password to pmcreativeservices@rcn.com but not to PatriciaRosemoor@rcn.com, which gets emails sent to me from my website. I believe it's a smpt rather than a pop address. I tried adding an email multiple times including when it asked for a new password and it wouldn't work.

This is crazy. I don't understand what happened. Now I have passwords both pop and smtp for PatriciaRosemoor@rcn.com but NO passwords for pmcreativeservices@rcn.com, which is my major email account. So emails had downloaded yesterday but none so far today. Normally I would have 30 or more emails every morning. Help!

I got the smpt one for pmcreativeservices back, but when I try to show passwords, it only shows the first half. I had been able to Use Ctrl - to make the lettering smaller so I could read the whole thing. Now that is not working. And I still don't have the pop password and can't figure out how to get it.

You may need to contact the email provider for that. Regarding showing the password, you can highlight and copy and paste it elsewhere if necessary to read

My pmcreativeservices account is now working properly but my PatriciaRosemoor@rcn.com gives me this: Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: [C20] Message blocked.. It gives that message either when I try to send to or from the account.

If error message says it is blocked then that is not Thunderbird who is blocking it. That message is from the server. It could be a temporary block, maybe you have too many attempts using wrong passwords etc. Maybe you are using less secure old server settings. Maybe your account has been noticed as sending alot of spam according to the server filters Or maybe the IP address or your email address has been blacklisted.

1. Check to see if your IP address and also your email address has been blacklisted. Use this link to check:

What did you find out?

2. Use a browser eg: Firefox or Microsoft Edge, to logon to the webmail account for the @rcn.com email address. That will confirm your password is correct. Whilst in your account, if you have had a password for along time, maybe it's time to modify it.

Tell us know:

  • Did you get access to your webmail account via a browser?
  • Did you modify your password or not whilst in the webmail account?

3. In Thunderbird: Tell us what server settings you are using by post the following:

  • Upload an image showing 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings'
  • Upload an image showing 'Account Settings' > 'Outgoing server (SMTP)' settings for the rcn.com account.
  • You could also access 'Help' > 'Troubleshooting Information', scroll down to the 'AMil and News Accounts' section and either copy all data and paste into forum OR get a screenshot and upload it.

4. Are you using a VPN. Please check your computer for a VPN. If you installed an Anti-Virus product maybe it has auto enabled a VPN. If you find a VPN and it's been enabled - disable it - switch it off as it hides your IP address and maybe that rcn server thinks you are a hacker because it cannot read your IP address. Report back on whether you discover a VPN and confirm you have switched it off.
