Problem with updating Firefox on Windows 11

more options

I use Firefox on a ASUS Vivobook running Windows 11. On April 1, it tried to update to version 137.0, but failed and led me into a update loop of sorts. I had to re-install Firefox just to force an update on it, and that worked for a bit. Just today, it decided to update... and led me into ANOTHER update loop, and it's saying that the "install failed" when I check the update history.

Is anybody else experiencing this bug, and is there a way to fix it?

And it gets worse: I had to download Firefox AGAIN to force the update onto my browser. And even though I "successfully" updated, it STILL says "Install Failed" when I check the update history.

1. Check for Windows Updates

Ensure that your Windows 11 is fully updated, as system updates can sometimes affect application installations.

Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Install any pending updates and restart your computer.

2. Clear Firefox Update Cache

Sometimes, corrupted update files can cause installation issues. You can clear the Firefox update cache:

   Close Firefox completely.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the following directory:

Code

   C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updates
Delete any files in the updates folder.
Restart your computer and try updating Firefox again.

3. Run Firefox as Administrator

Running Firefox with administrative privileges can sometimes resolve installation issues:

   Right-click on the Firefox shortcut.
   Select "Run as administrator."
Try checking for updates again by going to the menu (three horizontal lines) > Help > About Firefox.

4. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily

Sometimes, antivirus or firewall settings can interfere with the update process. Temporarily disable your antivirus software and firewall, then try updating Firefox again. Remember to re-enable them afterward. 5. Use the Firefox Installer

If the built-in update feature continues to fail, you can manually download and install the latest version of Firefox:

Go to the official Firefox download page.
Download the latest version of Firefox.
Run the installer. It should replace the existing version without affecting your bookmarks, passwords, or settings.

6. Create a New Profile

If the issue persists, it might be related to your Firefox profile. You can create a new profile to see if that resolves the issue:

Type about:profiles in the Firefox address bar and press Enter.
Click on "Create a New Profile."
Follow the prompts to create a new profile.
Launch Firefox with the new profile and check if the update issue persists.

7. Reset Firefox

If none of the above steps work, you can reset Firefox to its default settings:

Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) and select "Help."
   Choose "More Troubleshooting Information."
Click on the "Refresh Firefox" button. This will reset Firefox to its default state while saving your bookmarks and passwords.

8. Check Mozilla Support Forums

If the problem continues, it may be worth checking the Mozilla Support Forums to see if other users are experiencing similar issues and if there are any specific solutions.

But what should I do with the extra Firefox Installers I downloaded? Should I delete them?

UPDATE: It updated normally (after a tiny bit of prodding) the next time an update was available - and I did restart my computer.
