Load more than one Tbird Profile?

RB2124

I've read that I can create several Thunderbird profiles and load my desired Profile to startup and use the Profile Manager to switch profiles. I'm guessing that I can only load one profile into Thunderbird at a time (?).

And if I wanted to check emails from another profile I'd have to close or switch or somehow unload the current profile(?).

It would seem to me if it were possible to load more than one profile at a time, then if two profiles had the exact same mailbox account, it would cause problems(?).

Appreciate any input from those with experience in this.

An easy way to switch is to click help>troubleshootinginformation, click 'profiles' and then click 'about:profiles.' That opens a page listing the profiles and you can launch a different one there.

On your question, yes there could be problems, primarily if you have a POP account on multiple profiles, as each time you switch profiles, thunderbird will download mail into the inbox on that profile, yet there will also be an onbox on another profile, causing your messages to be in two places. My suggestion for multiple profiles is to keep each profile unique (although IMAP accounts would not be a problem).

To clarify, you cannot load more than one profile at a time.

Thanks david for the reply! I apologize for my late response it's been one of those weeks. Your reply helps shore up my conception of what I was imagining would be the case. I think I can see how I want to separate my profiles now. Probably a group of 4 email accts to each profile, or with with all accts within each IMAP server. Thanks again for the detailed reply! - Yes I always do IMAP and only store certain items permanent in Local Folders in created subfolders for each acct's Inbox and Sent. From inside Thunderbird say I wanted to create a Local Folders Subfolder for IMAP acct-> Gmail2222 I found I can do this inside Thunderbird by right click->create new folder (subfolder) inside of Local Folders named-> Gmail2222 I then right click and create 2 subfolders inside of Gmail2222 named Inbox & Sent. I can now copy or move any email(s) from the IMAP Inbox or Sent folders to the Inbox or Sent in Local Folders->Gmail2222->Inbox (or Sent). If I look at this in a file manager the files will appears like this, ProfileName\Mail\Local Folders\ has files named-> Gmail2222.msf and-> Gmail2222 <-(this is an mbox file) it has a folder named-> Gmail2222.sbd <-(this shows as an actual folder in a file manager) and inside of it are files named-> Inbox.msf and-> Inbox <-(this is an mbox file) and-> Sent.msf and-> Sent <-(this is an mbox file) It's kinda like deciding what you want and don't want saved and it's all in mbox format.

Thanks for sharing your approach. :)

david I've got a new issue, I've created another profile ok but starting everytime in the Profile Manager is slower than a direct run of Thunderbird. I had thought I could run a specific Profile via the cmd line but I've never done that and I can't seem find a way to get it past the shortcut failure message. Here's what I've done so far, "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p <-(will start Profile Manager) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p 98fra56z.default <-(didn't work) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p "98fra56z.default" <-(didn't work) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -p 98fra56z.default" <-(didn't work) "C:\Users\Dtm\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\98fra56z.default\ImapMail" <-(goes to folder)

Try setting a desktop icon to thunderbird normally then, rightclick and modify the target with this format, a space or two to the right of thunderbird.exe::

   -profilemgr "c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles\98fra56z.default"

Thanks david for the reply, I did this: The normal shortcut to Tbird was this "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" So tried this with one space after .exe, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -profilemgr C:\Users\Dtm\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\98fra56z.default

It did start the Profile Manager with a list Profiles)

and it also start's slow also and basically does the same thing as this, "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p

which starts the Profile Manager and lists the Profiles, it also gives an option to chose one in the list to start be default. It looks like this,

Main-default <-(my main Profile) Generic-default <-(Installed profile with no accounts) Proton-Accts <-(New Profile added) [ ] Work offline [ ] Use the selected profile without asking at startup [Start Thunderbird] [Exit]

If I select Main-default and then check [X] Use the selected profile without asking at startup Will that create what I'm looking for?

And then will, "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p

still start the Profiles Manager so I can choose the others?

Summation there doesn't seem to be away to start a specific Profile of choice just by creating a cmd line. Then I surmise these Portable Thunderbird apps are starting the Profile Manager every time(?)

Sure you can. But I'm not aware that -profilemanager can be shortened as -profilemgr. But you can shorten as -p

Also, you can't put a profile name or path after -profilemanager (or just

-P <profile name> or -p <profile path>

Starting with thunderbird.exe --help | more on Windows will list all the choices.
