No internet access via VPN

VPN is on. I can't access the internet. Error message is either: An error occurred during a connection to www.thewindowsclub.com. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

Or: Connect to the internet You're offline. Check your connection.

I've googled the issue but it talks about ports and tunnels and going into settings. I've looked in the VPN Mozilla settings and there only seems the option to either include or exclude a website from the VPN. Nothing about different ports and testing. I've already written this message once but the VPN was on so it disconnected the internet and I lost this message! Trying a 2nd time now without the VPN

Any help? Or should I give up with it?

thanks Annie

Mozilla VPN as one of the paid products has a dedicated support, please submit your question with your Mozilla VPN app by going to Settings > Help > Contact Support. Alternatively, you can sign in to the Mozilla account connected to your subscription here (if not already) and then use this link to get individual help.

Looks like you are referring to the built-in VPN in Firefox, though... Could you please clarify that?

Also, what happens when you change location? Doesn't the issue go away with any different locations?

Thanks Denys, yes I'm using the built-in VPN in Firefox. I've changed location to 4 other places and the same results. Any thoughts?

Hmm, got it. Here are some other things you can check:

  • Do you use any internet security software (e.g. third-party antivirus or firewall)? If so, try disabling it and see if that helps.
  • In Firefox Settings > Privacy and security > DNS over HTTPS > Advanced settings, what do you have selected? Try selecting Off and see if that helps.

Hi Denys, thanks so much. I use Sophos and I've disabled it, tried again, same problem. Also turned of the DNS as instructed, tried again, same problem. It's a head scratcher! ThanksAnnie

Don't really want to suggest that, but... would you be able to temporarily uninstall Sophos to test? Sometimes such kind of software can affect your connection even when "disabled" (I have no idea if that's the case, but... maybe?)

Yeah, I have to say, I'm not happy to do that because it's a mahoosive palava because I'm not particularly computer literate and someone else set it all up for me. But I'm really grateful for your trying to help. Maybe it's just because it's a BETA?

No, the concept and technology won't change going out of beta — it's more likely Sophos can't snoop inside that connection, so it halts any traffic inside that line.

Try opening a non-SSL page using the VPN line, like httpforever.com — to see if perhaps an error page from some middlebox is stuffed into that.
