how can I get bookmarks to display folders, sub folders and sub sub folders, in topical outline format in a single box to the left of my screen, instead of opening up in mulitple boxes that covers my screen so I can't see anything???

Try ctl+b. (In the menu bar menu under View - alt+v > sidebar.
