Hi guys,

Since last Mozilla update to version 23.0 my check-spelling isn't working anymore. I seem to be miss-writing every word, as all of them are being underlined.

How do I solve this problem? I do not want to change to another crappy browser just because I can't use a check-spelling add-on...

Just as a side note, this whole thing was working on version 22, and I don't quite understand why it isn't now. I just want to see this fixed, please help? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem and solved it by uninstalling Firefox 23 and all its data and downgrade to Firefox 22. Now the spell checking is working correctly! If a developer is reading this, please check the issue. My computer has Windows 8 64bit.

NOTE Apparently this problem was caused by a Firefox bug that was fixed in Firefox 23.1 The nature of the problem was such that none-English installs were most likely to be affected. My post under gives more information.

Users should not have this problem now, or if you do then it is likely to be another cause. Please therefore start a new question of your own using the standard link /questions/new/firefox

Anyone gonna figure out what happen to the spell checker?

I can't go above version 19, any version above that I get no right click option "check spelling".

Dictionary installed yea but "add dictionary" does not disappear from the right click menu.

I tried all the suggested "fixes" here in the forum but nothing works to correct the problem, it works fine using FF 19.0 but its getting kind old at this point I would like to move up to later version.

Do you "have Check my spelling as I type" selected in Options/Preferences -> Advanced checked?

Do you have a "Check Spelling" item in the right-click context menu of a text area that has a check-mark?

Note that you will always see the "Add Dictionaries" entry in the right-click context menu, but you should see installed dictionaries and have a check-mark on an installed dictionary to select this dictionary.

Yes check spelling as I type is checked, no I do not have the check spelling item in the right click menu.

When check spelling is present in the right click menu the Add dictionaries is not present. As I understand it that is normal, the fact it doesn't disappear is in part the problem a symptom of a larger issue.

I add the English dictionary however that doesn't change anything, still no check spelling option in the right click menu and no underlining mis spelled words. I do not have to add any dictionary version 19 or before, for spell checker to work as it should.

Hi xploer250

You need to go Help > Troubleshooting Information >

Then left side, There are one box "Reset Firefox to its default state"

and click on "Reset Firefox"

I have done and solved the all problem with spelling check

Current Firefox versions hide Check Spelling in the right-click context menu of a text area if the web page disables the spelling check via a spellcheck="false" attribute of this element.

You can right-click in the text editor area and use "Inspect Element" to see if this text area has a spellcheck="false" attribute.

Removing this spellcheck="false" attribute by selecting it via a double-click and using the Delete or Backspace key should make the Check Spelling item in the right-click context menu reappear.

You can also use one of these bookmarklets to remove this attribute.

javascript:void(document.activeElement.setAttribute('spellcheck','true'));
javascript:void(document.activeElement.contentDocument.querySelector('*[spellcheck]').setAttribute('spellcheck','true'));
