Hi KuchleiT, since "horrible" isn't very specific, could you list out the parts of the UI you would like to modify? For example:

• the tab bar redesign => change floating buttons back to connected tabs [workaround below]
• the theme => restore dark background behind tabs [workaround below]
• spacing between menu items => reduce to previous spacing [workaround below
• wireframe graphics style => change the artwork to...
• something else

Tab Style: I can give you a quick short-term workaround, but a more durable solution will require more work.

Temporary Fix

For testing purposes, there is a preference to switch the tab bar and address bar between new style and old style. This is not expected to continue in Firefox 90, but maybe you want to use it for now.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new style) and false (old style)

Longer Term Community Workaround

This involves setting up a userChrome.css file. I have a rules builder that will get more features throughout the month. By the time the above preference is removed, it should be mature. If you want to take a sneak peek now:

If you prefer the colors of the "Default" theme from Firefox 57-88, someone created an add-on theme that emulates it. You can give it a try here:

When I read the consequences of reverting to an older version the second solution is no better. My comment about "horrible" is because due to eyesight issues the overall white format with little contrast makes it very difficult to make out much of the upper part of the screen. I also don't understand the need to make such a drastic change to what was always a very easy format to follow. Change for changes sake is foolish and does a disservice to long time users. You really need to do more testing with a varied group of users to ensure the utility of your changes.

So if someone has any safe ways to make changes to the color and contrast of the new format I am all ears. If not, after very many years of using Mozilla apps I will have to go looking for one that works for me.

I tried the "browser.proton.enabled" thing that jscher2000 showed in another post and it did kind of work. It removed all the excess spacing between tabs and stuff but I just didn't like to have to tweak so many annoying stuff just to get the browser to work as a browser. I don't think there's a density option in 89 either so you're stuck with fat tabs. In the end I just reverted to version 88 and disabled update for now. I had issues with my bookmarks menu taking up so much space after the update and again had to go in to about:config to disable that. Overall an annoying UI update that no one asked for.

As I said in another post: "We're PC users here not mobile. The amount of websites that try to be "modern" by having HUGE buttons and lots of wasted space isn't what we're looking for. We're here to use a good browser for what we need to look for on the web. We don't turn on Firefox to admire how pretty the tabs look. My bookmarks folder before the update only goes down to half my monitor. After the update, it goes down 3/4 of the monitor.... not what we need."

So yeah, try the methods jscher2000 showed, it works somewhat. If not just downgrade. If you're worried about security patches and whatnot, you can install two versions of Firefox. One with say 88, the other with current update until you can find a way to get it to work decent. This is like the equivalent of Microsoft forcing down our throat W10 UI over W7 awesomeness when they released it.

When you install an add-on, Firefox shows you a panel of what data access permissions the add-on needs. Basic themes do not have any data access permissions, but sophisticated extensions require a variety of permissions. So be careful and consider whether the developer is trustworthy. Understood. I always used a "Light" theme with Firefox 57-88, so it looks the same to me, but I understand many users preferred the "Default" theme so that's why I suggested the add-on theme I suggested earlier.
