Continual "Not Responding" - 5 times a day???

at least 4-5 times a day I get a message that says "not responding" (emails) - have to close program and restart. OK for 30 minutes and get another "Thunderbird Not responding" - whay is that happening and how can I fix it???

My immediate question is what anti virus program are you using? Almost all not responding issues are the result of anti virus actions. McAfee having the worst reputation at the moment.
